View Full Version : Internet demands video of Linux running 100+ apps. Any takers?

Yesterday, this picture (http://www.flickr.com/photos/burnflare/2387682004/) showed up on digg.

Today, this video (http://gizmodo.com/377255/vista-running-108-apps-bites-back-mac-os-x-butt).

Just for fun, I think someone should make a video of compiz throwing at least 100 windows around a cube or something.

Anybody up for it?

I have done it. I will do it tonight if no one does it before I get home.

I would like to take this time to point out that OS X's expose feature appears to be functionally superior to Compiz's Scale plugin. Scale places all windows on a grid regardless of shape or size, but Expose appears to more efficiently use the space if that screenshot is any indication. Is there an improved version of Scale out there that does this?

I will give it a try I only have 1gb ram (cpu is ok).

I'll give it a try, but I don't know if I have a 100+ apps. haha

Might be wise to do this in xubuntu, but i'll try in ubuntu anyhow.

If it is successful (I doubt it) I'll post the video to blip.tv and put the link here.

Hope someone can modify the scale plugin or provide a way to do this...

There are other values that count.
No one needs compiz but everyone needs drivers.

I have the feeling that "application" is being confused here with "window."

*sigh*

Maybe I'm confused here, but how is this any kind of indication of anything really? I've never made comparisons, but having a Terminal open can't possibly use as much memory - or as many CPU cycles - as say, Firefox, for example.

Wouldn't having 100 open instances of Firefox be more daunting than 100 open Terminals? Or am I just totally off the beam here?

100 apps at once? That's nothing, I can run 100+ Firefox windows at once, and that's on my Athlon XP (1.5ghz, 512mb of RAM, with Compiz on a Radeon x800, 'radeon' driver). I'll take this challenge and up it to 200 - and I'll do it on a live disk with Compiz (FusionLive pre-anything, it's just slax with GNOME). I'll have a video by tonight. (On my laptop, sorry, can't risk turning my server off for that long)

I'm nowhere in league with you guys, but I managed to get 27 apps, but several were running in background (like transmission, ssh server, etc.) and my choice of programs was heavy too. I was running things like monodevelop, eclipse, gimp, geany, spreadsheet and in general stuff that is more intensive. And I did that on my 3.4GHz machine running on 1GB memory.

The screenshot is pretty clean, take a look :)

I'm afraid that won't win over the internets...

Here are two videos - one with 100 windows open (scale plugin arranged them in a 10x10 grid) (click (http://www.mediafire.com/?saixnybo0zm))

And another where I additionally opened firefox, and then win xp in virtualbox (click (http://www.mediafire.com/?1cqnbmm2ttc)).

Could someone who knows video editing make them look nice with captions and all, & submit wherever it's needed?

Edit: zomg! I should've watched the screenshot + video first. I was supposed to go over 150 and show the cpu usage... it's in the top gnome panel, first box, if anyone can point it out.

I know this is a bit off the point at hand but...
The more I see of Vista's Aero the less I like it. I find it lack usefullness. It's not nearly as good at scaling windows. Does it really matter how many apps can be opened? I'm not sure it really proves anything. Compiz has far better features than Aero, Mac on the other hand looks about as good as Compiz. They seem to have figured it out.

Now I got all 101 programs. Someone look at that and tell me if I am cheating in a way, i'll make sure to not cheat. I have 3gb of RAM, a 4400+ AMD processor, and a 7800GT. I'm listening to music through amarok right now too (just realized that I had 2 open, thats 100 then). So my computer is still usable. cube is a litte laggy though.

Just for clarification, someone might consider changing the title of this to "Internet demands video of Compiz scaling 100+ apps"?

I would love to show the desktops of the 34 some odd people using 450 apps on one of my servers, which I personally think is a hell of a lot more impressive than scaling 100 apps on a single screen... Unfortunately, they aren't even all in the same geographic location, which makes such an attempt a little more difficult.. The real question doesn't seem to have anything to do with linux capabilities, only Compiz.

The Digg comments are funny.

People were boasting about it when they did it on their own platforms (Vista, OSX), but when we beat them both, they're like "this is pointless" or "get a life". Bunch of hypocrites.

Maybe I'm being too serious about it. :)

It is pointless. Technically the only thing that limits the amount of programs open is the RAM and CPU. Don't believe OS sets a limit.

Saying that, Ubuntu's smaller footprint means that there can be more programs open on a limited RAM :)

Well, if we ever make a video like this again, we need to buff it up and make it look more professional than that one that ended up hitting Digg's top 10. Kudos to the guy who made it, but it's no sound, worse, an unidentifiable clicking in the background like your sound card is broken. And the waiting on the typing in the text editor for zooming into it so we can read it.... that probably shouldn't have been done either... Two very boring elements that held the video back, I think. Still, it made the top 10 on digg.

Criticizing a volunteer offering for something you requested is not exactly respectful. Perhaps you could specify your pre-requisites prior to your next request before talking down on something they have took the time out of their day to create on your behalf. Beggars can be choosers. =]

I can't think of more than 30 or max 40 or so GUI apps to run. I've always got about 150-200+ processes going, that's normal, but not separate programs.

Vadi, what did you use to capture your desktop for your video?
