Good day!
Bought Asus EeePC yesterday! That's really a wonderful thing! Ubuntu 7.10 LiveCD (via ext CD-ROM) works perfectly! Compiz works! I really like it! Do not treat this post as an ad, the notebook is really great for me and highly recommended! The only thing that I didn't like was screen resolution, but on the other hand this is the price that we pay for a really small size... Didn't try it's webcam under Ubuntu also. Yet, another thing is that it was shipped with WindowsXP Home (you can erase it, right?) but I think XP is too fat for it's small hard disk (mobility again) so Ubuntu or other Linux distribution is the only right choice I think.

You don't need an external CD drive to install Ubuntu (or some other linux distro) on the eee, you can do it via memory stick. There's a nice howto on that here (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick).

They'd be perfect if you could adjust the resolution without scaling.
Considering the low price tag there isn't much else to complain about :)

I've used one with some flavour of Linux installed and I really didn't like it. I guess I just don't see the point or have a need for such a thing.
Having said that, it is great that Ubuntu with all bells and whistles works great on these things :)

i agree i have had 1 since xmas, i dont use compiz on it becuase i find the screen 2 small for that sort of stuff, but for sofa surfing and taking with you its excellent.
I added a touch screen, which i love using
I couldnt stand xandros, the os seemed very babyish
i have Icebuntu on my eee, managed to get the install down to 367mb by using squashfs on some of the folders, the install was 700mb before
any one considering getting one i would highly recommend that you do

Good day!
Bought Asus EeePC yesterday!
How much did you pay for it? I think its slightly expensive in India (Rs. 17,000 != $425).
I am planning to pick one & I need some guidance. Considering the current specs is it worth buying? Isn't it under-powered? Shall I wait for an upgrade? To be honest Xandros currently sucks on it! Also I fail to understand how on earth did it ran compiz!!!! What was the config? The one I checked had pearl white chassis with 512MB RAM.
And finally what is so special about eee900?

I have been buying these for our people traveling at work.
All of them are the 4G versions. All work well.
We have one outfited with XP pro and Excel and Word 2003. Still a gig left on the 4 gig. That is not an issue because the guy who uses it carries and Ironkey - secure thumbdrive - they keep the data safe - 10 times fail to log into it, and the key self destructs!
He uses excel and word then gets webmail when he is traveling.
Another one I left with the Xandros. It is OK becuase the person is in upper management and really does not know how it works... It is arm candy...
I installed ubuntu and xubuntu - still have not got the sound working right, nor could I get the wireless to work under ubuntu - the xubuntu worked fine for that.
Install was a pain as the "next" buttons were off the bottom of the screens...
But this Eee is great for traveling - email, documents, use a SD card or a thumb drive and you are set!

I have one with Gutsy installed, I use compiz specifically because I find the extra workspace convenient.
