Who's buying a new iPod?

I am totally obsessed with the new iPod updates announced today. VIDEO! H.264 and MPEG-4.

Now, I'm not looking for anyone to tell me how much iPods suck and how much playerXX is amazing. I just want to know if anyone else is planning on going out and buying one of these babies soon, and if so, how do they intend to take advantage of the video features?

I really want to get one, and based on my research, I believe the latest amaroK SVN will handle music just fine (possibly without having to format the iPod with iTunes first). So that's good. But what about video? I dare say, amaroK developers have time and time again shutdown the idea of video support themselves, so what about transferring videos to the iPod for playback?

I for one will be an early Linux adopter and get one for music, and I will hack away at getting video transfer support as well. If it doesn't go well, I may just have to add a Mac Mini or an iMac to my arsenal.

No, I wont get it. Anytime soon anyway, and if I ever do, it will have to get a price reduction and be really awesome.

I dont really like the whole iPod crowd, the ones who just choose it because its the only mp3 player they know.

Like the supid people at school who see one and say "Nice ipod" when it is just a normal run of the mill made in china apple production.

I can't think of a reason why the new iPod isn't really awesome.

I do a lot of pro-audio engineering, and I really enjoy the audio quality of iPods. I know of a lot of other Creative, Sony, Dell, Toshiba players, but the iPod looks and sounds the best. And it plays video, for only $399. Show me an ogg player that can play Theora (in addition to MPEG-4) and looks great, and is super thin, and I'll convert my entire collection right now.

I'll wait for the competition to come out in the near future. When I decide to purchase a mp3 player, I want the best bang for my buck and 399 is just too steep for me even with video playback. I also hate the fact that Apple is about as closed standard and closed source as it gets.

Ya' know, an iPod is the whole reason I'm running Ubuntu right now.
You have seen, I assume, the Linux on iPod. Well, when I won my little 4th gen photo, the FIRST thing I did was void my warranty by putting Linux on it. (Nice getting a 20gig hard drive for free!)
So now, I'm kinda' inspired to learn about computers again.

What really inspired me was watching a video on iPod. A month ago, I think it was.

Whoa!!!!!!

I won't be buying an iPod of any kind any time soon, to be honest. Myself, I use a 64MB mp3 player (the cheapest I could buy) to play music out and about, and I'm quite happy. If I want to fit a lot of music on it, I can just encode my music at a lower bitrate, since I don't mind low sound quality. I'm savin' money.

I know you aren't looking for ney sayers, but I just want to point out from my own personal experiance that I have not seen much good about iPods. I won't say they suck, however...just that I have had to test far too many of them being returned, and never seeing any of their competition coming back for repairs (I know that the store I worked for did indeed sell them often enough). Anywho, that is my two cents.

As far as the idea of a compact, computer uplink video player, that is just too cool! Good luck on getting it to work for you, and I hope you don't have too much trouble with it (unless that is what you are looking for >:) )

I will not be buying one for a few reasons:

1. I just got a Nano two weeks ago
2. I like the small form factor of the nano
3. Video playback doesn't appeal to me. If I want to watch something, I'll turn on the TV.... though porn playback in the classroom has a certain appeal to it..

Hi!

I got my ipod yesterday. Its a 30gb video ipod. It worked out of the box using gtkpod. There is even a patch tested for video transferring, but haven't tried that yet. Anyway transferring music and formatting the ipod works without problems in gtkpod. You can easily install it through apt-get for those who don't know it. greets
