View Full Version : Predictions for Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron...

From what I've seen of Hardy Heron, this release will be the absolute best release for anyone new to Linux. With the addition of Wubi to the number of installation options, this is what I predict:
- There will be another influx of new users - not just the same ubuntu users, but a lot of people with an interest in technology will give it a go. This means we will need a lot more people patrolling the Absolute Beginners Forum on release day and the following weeks. It should be noted that some of these users might be frustrated if they read an article which makes ubuntu sound TOO good. If these users do decide to go back to Windows (and a lot of them will), don't forget to remind them of the 8.10 release, which may work better for them.
- The new release will be covered in the media - Digg will have a release post with upwards of 2,000 Diggs, technology sections of newspapers may have a small article about the new release, and maybe even the television networks will cover it if it's a slow news day. This will be mainly due to the addition of Wubi - this will be a vital step in enticing new users. The amount of articles talking about the beta alone makes me predict this.
- Ubuntu's official website/servers will be inundated by the amount of downloads and will fall back to a low-bandwidth page instead (like 7.10 did). The apt repositories will be slightly slower with all the upgrading taking place. If you want to download the Ubuntu 8.04 CD, I recommend using the torrent instead - reducing strain for everyone.
- Despite this, the general consensus of the public will be that it's VERY nearly ready for them, but not quite. I'm guessing about 20% of the new people downloading the latest release will stick with it.

I really doubt the media will cover it, mainly because you won't see
a bunch of people in a store like with vista.
The media would probably botch it horribly too.

i just hope that hardy would be very stable and issues like hibernation and sleep would have been resolved... when i started linux i last year was up for bling bling .. now all i want is some stability for my system

So far I like Hardy very much. I took the plunge and installed Kubuntu KDE4 and it its... buggy. It looks fantastic though.

I guess my predictions are not so enthusiastic. Gutsy was OK at first (in spite of the continuous Flash on FF freezing problems), but with each update it slowly fell apart. The latest Beta of Hardy Heron does not like my Vostro laptop: video drivers, wifi, and card reader are completely hosed. This is a step back since they worked in Gutsy.

Noob question here: will there be an easy upgrade path for my 7.10 or will I have to do a clean install? Will there be the option to roll it back if I find problems?
I've got a non standard dual boot installation. I use the WindowsXP boot loader to start Grub, rather than the other way around so I'm wary of messing with that.
Oh, and predictions would be that it should just continue increasing the profile of Ubuntu and hopefully will have no real new problems the previous version didn't have.

Will you be able to update? Of course just run: (Ubuntu only)
update-manager -d
Roll back? Nope.

I don't mean to that extent, just articles in newspapers (at least over here in the UK).

the usual media will cover it. When gutsy came out, a few newspapers covered it, and the usual influx of internet news articles.
Pulseaudio is the thing that is most shaky at the moment.....

Well, just by look alone Hardy could gain new users. A lot of my friends commented on the way Hardy looked just last night, especially the default wallpaper and the theme I'm using (Blended). It's led to some interest and I think I'm gonna be helping some get live cds to try it out. Hardy's gonna be solid kids, but is that news to anyone?

This option won't be there. IMO it would be better to try out the LiveCD first and THEN upgrade if it works.

Wubi will be a major step to tell people the Linux mystery. BUT One thing I am sure is that Windows love, might say "What kind of system is that, NO IE, NO Mplay, And look at it! Vista looks much better." Or something like that just to try look it down. And Of course that is because they become no skill and ignorance under the windows poison. hehe.
For those who is already sick of windows and looking for a way out. They will be like "OMG, That is what I have been looking for like years. Can't believe such thing exist the way they are."

Greater stability and faster boot times (I hope). Gutsy was a step backwards in this regard (at least for me). I am not expecting a major aesthetic overhaul as was the case for Dapper (if the beta is any indication of what the final product will look like).

install Hardy in a seperate partition.
lots of your software may not be available in .deb in sites like getdeb.net for a month or so.
when you got everything working and you're done with gutsy just format it's partition.
But keep that partition around because in a few months you could be testing 8.10

-I hope it has fixed VPN problem because in 7.10 I can not use VPN.
-Also I hope the hibernate feature work as it should work.
-I really like to see some complete and new theme like mac4lin which is the most complete theme that I ever seen.
-I also wish to see a better performance :P
-Also I would like to see alot of compiz-fusion stuff included in the installation DVD
Thanks.
