is there a way to get gedit to auto indent like idel does?

You can have it autoindent. I don't know what or how idel is though.
Just go in the preferences and look, that is what I did to find out.

I don't think gedit has the autoindent for python, Idle is good, mad good though.

Gedit is better :-)
Gedit has a lot of plugins, including a Python console, search in synaptic.

Another simple and nice editor with default Python mode included in SciTE - small, nimble, and as a plus, available also for Windows (as single executable)

Geany. It does Python, Perl, and the Cs. Do you really need anything else for linux?

In gedit if you go to edit > preferences > editor, it has an automatic indentation option
