I've just signed up with this (http://www.bethere.co.uk/) service provider and my 24 Meg service will be up and running in 2 weeks from now. :KS

Will do, I have 8 meg now with Cable & Wireless(Bulldog Broadband). It's kick ass but C&W's customer service is non-existent and have a very poor billing system witch is the main reason I left and of course the fact that I can get 24 meg for £6/pm less than the 8 meg.

Hm, are Telewest any good? I've been on their website and it says that their installers won't work with Linux? Does this mean I'll have to set it up on a Windows machine first?

i use ubuntu on a p4 pc with a telewest modem giving me 1meg. its cool through the network port, i dont know if it will work with usb... btw, they are raising the speed to 4 meg (£25) soon for no extra charge. (still rather pales into insignificance to the beast of the 24meg... im telpted to get a bt number again so i can subscribe...!)

I have 100mbit up & down at my flat in tokyo that is included in my rent, i think I can upgrade it to 1Gbps here by paying a small fee but 100 is more than enough for my needs =)

I have 100Mbit up & down
Me too, it's provided by my university. Not bad for 10€ per month.

Telewest are ok but it still works through a BT exchange and I've learnt the hard way that not having a BT line just creates problems in the future.

lets all drink tea to celebrate the UK finally getting fast broadband
It's been a long time coming now but it seems BT has finaly upgraded their exchanges and lines for residential areas to handle more bandwidth. Lets hope that not to far in the distant we'll have 100meg or 1gig like Mr. Topcop there in Tokyo.

When I read Your posts then I think that I live on Mars.
I'm on the 128kb down / 32kb up net connection.
100 Mbit ? Damn, thats fast ! 1Gb ? Man, I don't want to think how would that work on my PC :)
I hope Poland will catch up sometime to the rest of the world in net speed :)

yeah but the high tax rates in more socialist countries like finland more than make up for it.

Unfortunately no. Most servers don't send the data as fast as I could download it. From fast Finnish servers I can usually download at about 1 - 5 MB/s.

That's true, but I'll enjoy it as long as I'm on the receiving end. I know that when I get out of this school I get to pay my share back multiple times. Taxes do suck, but on the other hand education is what makes Finland competitive, that's how we prevent all the jobs from going to China or India.

Congrats mate.
I'm using a 10Mbps up and down fiber connection at home, it's about £21 / month. I *always get 1MB/s when downloading from fast servers (i.ex. servers on SUNET), but still, I want more speed -_-
My ISP is upgrading my connection Week 8 (that's February 2006) to 100Mbps down and 10Mbps up - can't wait for it :)
Edit: * - spelling

Not quite sure what you mean by this...Telewest (Blueyonder) is cable and has nothing to do with BT or BT lines.

i have a mate who just signed up with a '24-mbit' service, i told him it was a bit of a con and it was. turns out he only gets about 9-mbit or so. which isn't bad in itself but seing as your paying for 24-mbit...

God... 1 GB/s. DIE DIE DIE!
I pay about 80 euros a month for 1.5mbit down, 196 kbps up. With a traffic limit of 10gb. Freaking T-Com bastards riping us off.
We will have ADSL2+ soon with 8-24mbps though, and the prices will go down a lot (flat rate for all of course). They are starting to rent it out in 2 months I think.
Thank God T-Com can't hold their damn monopol anymore.

Actually, you don't pay for 24Mbps, you pay for "up-to 24Mbps". The speed you get IRL depends on the quality of the cables that go from your house to the nearest phonestation and the distance between these two (house and phonestation).
Then you have other things that might affect the speed, for example if there's a bandwidth limit in that area, so that all the people connected there are sharing a 1Gb/s connection or it could just be high load on the network.
