April 2008 Desktops - Posting Guidelines

* Stay within the board rules, no matter how hot you may believe the wallpaper/screen shot to be.

* If you are going to quote, there isn't a need to quote an img-embeded picture - Just don't do it. Please just reference the post by page number/page link/etc.

* Off Topic Posts will be edited or removed.

* The desktops thread is not to be used as a means to post explicit or suggestive, and provocative images (they must be safe for your kids and/or boss to see). Please help to keep the thread relevant and safe to browse for everyone.

* The moderators of this forum reserve the right to edit or remove your posts as necessary so they may comply with our Community Rule set.

* Please use reduced-size thumbnails, where possible, out of respect for people running on lower bandwidth or screen resolutions.

*To avoid having users having to ask you for them. we request that you format your posts in the following order:

Themes: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

Wallpaper: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

Icons: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

Programs: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

Important Note: Any image posted that is over 800 x 600 will be removed! Use a thumbnail or use a text link to your image. If your image is removed, this is why.

Ummmm, similar post? There's a post exactly like this one... It even has the same topic, why post another one?

It's essentially April now, where I live, according to my computer's clock.

Here's my desktop for April...

GTK: Clearlooks
Emerald: Gommoso
Icons: CrashBit alpha
(All on gnome-look)
Wall: Can't remember, I can upload if anyone wants it.

I'm thinking of editing the ROX source code to make the icons on the desktop bigger - these are some delicious japanese-themed icons.

Programs you see are Rox Filer, Leafpad, Firefox, aterm, conky.

I use the Tango icon set, with Yoritsuki Japanese icons set for some special folders.

GTK theme is Aurora Borealis edited for extra roundedness.

Fluxbox theme is created by me to fit with gtk (it's really just one gradient, this kind are my fluxbox themes :)).

Wallpaper is called ... "Stripes" by invaderjohn on deviantart.com

On the first image you see "TEH ZEN". My desktop looks like that after i start it.
Second screen demonstrates the gtk theme, you can also see the icons of some minimized windows, scattered around.
The last one is Rox boasting beautiful icons, conky running, and the ultimate fluxbox eyecandy - xcompmgr. :|

Click here for more screens. (http://vesso.marv.lafka.net/screens/screens19/) Go up one folder for big gallery of evolving desktop since 2006.

lol, you have a lot of unread messages.

How do you like IceWM?

It's mostly facebook spam and the like, I look at the title then go to the actual site to read it without actually clicking the message.

IceWM is pretty good, takes a bit to configure but it's as light as fluxbox and looks pretty good, and not like a minimalist WM (i dont prefer the look personally)

It's mostly facebook spam and the like, I look at the title then go to the actual site to read it without actually clicking the message.

IceWM is pretty good, takes a bit to configure but it's as light as fluxbox and looks pretty good, and not like a minimalist WM (i dont prefer the look personally)

Still, how can you stand having it say that many? I even clean out my inbox periodically because I hate having so many messages.

I'm using Fluxbox,

edit: I changed the icons to ximian-north because the other ones were clashing, heh, and changed the colours of the window borders to those of the GTK scheme, again it was clashing...

With 1.4 onwards right click on the tabs to select which ones to hide/show. There's an old version in the repos 1.2 or something, you can get newer versions from getdeb (http://getdeb.net/search.php?keywords=sonata).

You are an Openbox wizard.
Awesome as always.

Thank you. I didn't expect anyone would praise those screenshots :p but I've worked a bit more on the theme and came up with a matching Gtk theme. Here is the result. The Gtk theme still needs a little work (mainly on things you don't see in the screenshot). Feedback is always welcome.

Openbox 3.4.6 with a homemade Openbox theme, Gtk theme and wallpaper; icons are nuoveXT-1.6, fonts are Arial Rounded MT and HeldustryFTV Basic Black.

Once I settle on a name for the theme, I'll upload it to box-look.org.

I believe it actually depends on the GTK theme you're using. I'm a Xfce user myself, and what I do is to go to the gtkrc file inside of the gtk-2.0 directory of the theme I'm currently using. After opening the gtkrc with, say, Gedit or Mousepad, you might find an option on the first lines of the document, saying "gtk-menu-images = 1". Switch the 1 to a 0 (zero). Save the gtkrc file and reload the theme. That should work.

What is that calendar/todo application (top right)? It looks interesting.

calcurse, a CLI calendar app. It's pretty nice, for what it is. one thing I like about it is how it can return your appointments from the command line. for example doing this:

calcurse -n | tr -d '\n'

will give me my next scheduled appointment. i added this to my wmii config file, and now it will always show my next appointment (if in the same day) on the notification area. Here is a screenshot. look in the bottom right, it's telling me to go to bed at a reasonable time tonight.

Black-white icon theme. Will probably change or make custom, need more minimalistic and better app support (like Tango)..

GTK2 theme is Clearlooks Dark Brave.

Wallpaper is Hardy-Simple Brave.

Emerald theme is Gommoso Brave Dark.

Removed all panels by adding this in Compiz-Fusion>General Options>Opacity>(class=Gnome-panel) & !(type=Dialog) with value 0.

Using gnome-do for opening apps. For notification-area, I just got to remember where certain apps I need to open/see info is placed..

Music player is MPD with Sonata.

I don't know of any tutorials, but i've noticed that it's usually not that hard to tweak existing ones. All you really have to do is rename the picture you want as background.jpg, move it to the login screen folder, and then edit the rc file. At least for changing small things, it's usually pretty easy to do it this way.

Are they Compiz specific?

It's screenlets. They required a compositing manager but I don't know if they still do. The developers were working on it

I've noticed recently that there are quite a few Arch users here. It makes me really want to give it a serious try. I've dabbled with it in past: installed it and set up a gui and got a solid desktop, but i've never used it for an extended period of time as a main desktop.

Theme's just Human. I try all sorts of others but always end up back at the bog-standard.

Wallpaper's from Eboy (http://hello.eboy.com/eboy/category/object/product-tags/pixorama/).

Icons at the bottom are all pretty standard I think. Icons at the top I made myself for my console emulators.

WTF??!! I had trouble with Imageshack resizing the preview so I put it on imgPlace.com instead. Just clicked on the link and it comes up fine.

Lemme clear my cache and try again...

[edit] No, still works fine for me. Could you or someone else let me know what's coming up 'cause that's quite worrying.

I've looked into the matter. The image and the link are fine.

What is happening is that if you click the "flag image" link on the hosting site, you would be reporting the image as something bad that should not be posted there. They use "child pornography" as an example of what bad stuff is.

There is nothing wrong with Mr Mark's post, picture, or link.

Today it looks like this (I'm still finding my way on how to customise it and can never decide whether I like them or not!). I prefer it to look fairly business like.

Its the Human base theme
The window borders are the Zune metacity theme
The icons are the Glass icon set

All stuff downloaded from Gnome Look

Oh, and MS fonts.

You can do it with fbgrab.
It's a little harder to do if you want to capture a running program (like htop) but you can still use fbgrab
In another tty, run

sleep 2; cp /dev/fb/0 fb.dump
(The sleep is to give you time to switch to the tty you want a screenshot of)
Then

fbgrab -w 1280 -h 800 -b 32 -f fb.dump something.png
Obviously substitute proper numbers / filenames here.

If you just want to take a shot of the current tty (after running a program or something)

fbgrab somefile.png
is all you need.

You can do it with fbgrab.

Think you could get me a link to that wallpaper? Or even better, the pattern that was used to make it.
