View Full Version : Ubuntu released on holiest day of the year

It's kinda sad to see ubuntu being released on the jewish day of atonement (yom kippur), not great public relations really to a significant part of the community- kinda like it being released on september 11th only worse.

I mean no disrespect, but I don't understand why this is a problem. What does this have to do with religion ? What would be wrong about releasing it on 9/11, for that matter ? Given the number of commemorations around the world, there's a good chance that any given day is a day of mourning for some denomination/nationality.

If anyone refuses to try Ubuntu because of such bizarre correlation, then I doubt the community would lose sleep over it.

One of my favorite records was released on 9/11 2001 at the same time of the attacks on WTC and Washington. It's a damn good record and it was very sad day. There isn't any connection between the events.

I'm sure Ubuntu is secular/humanist and that the developers had other things on their heads than the date itself.

No one planned to release on yom kipper, and we don't even know if the release won't be pushed back yet (like Hoary was) so this might be a non issue. In fact it is a non issue, because Ubuntu has nothing to do with religion. At all.

But hey, you try your hardest to be the forum's official troll escuchamezz so if this is the worst you can come up with then we must be doing ok. You used to complain more about semi-legit stuff, but now you complain that Ubuntu MIGHT release on the same day as a holiday.

I was going to close this thread like most of your threads designed to troll, but this time I want the ridiculousness of your claims to stick around for all to see and comment on.

Just go to wikipedia: they have a thing about anniversaries and the like for each day of the year. Maybe it shouldn't be released period, in case someone is offended. ;)

Seriously though, it's an interesting webpage, useful for trivial/fun facts.

Its a shame to see you post this thread on columbus day. Not a very good public relations to a significant part of the community. columbus day is a day when americans look back at their history and reflect on how this country was found.

<Disclaimer - I am Jewish>

look at it this way... give the servers an extra day to catch up, or just download the RC today. Got a problem with that? Of course you do, becuase you just love being controversial.

I'm done feading the troll, he should have no problem fasting #-o

<<edit>>

oh, i forgot to mention - any Jew should knwo that the holiest day is really Shabbat... every Friday night to Saturday night. so quick to pull the trigger, are you going to reprimand every distro releasing on a Friday or Saturday?

Uhm yeah. Maybe, just to make it easier and to stop any chance of breezy being released on any day that might offend, we should create a new day? We always have bits left over at the end of each year, maybe we should put those together for our extra day?

You said it. The probability of something special happening on any given date is increased every year when new wars start and end. Ubuntu is international, so honouring them all is impossible and indesirable.

I do not see the offense in releasing this on any holy day.

Come on, now. Santa Claus figures, Christmas Trees, Presents, all sold for Christmas, a religous Christan holiday. No one complained. The easter bunny was sold for Easter, another Christan holiday, but still, no one complained. Many products are released on religious holidays. Would you complain if Apple released Mac OS X Leopard on Christmas?

I would, but only if I was planning to buy it for someone. It would be too late for christmas by then.
The only reason many things aren't usually released on major holidays is because everything is closed.
