I would not have been aware of this event at all but for this.

Cool. Here's a thought. 2 years ago I used to have pretty much everything on standby, TV, DVD, HIFI, WIFI on etc. I started switching them all off when not needed and reduced my fuels bills by about 30%. A big finacial saving and hopefully, adding a little less to my carbon footprint

I've read somewhere that a black screen does not make any difference on an LCD. I don't know if it's true, but it looks plausible.

It says in the link for Earth hour that pretty much no modern monitor saves energy by displaying black, which is why it's not permanent, it's a symbolic thing to draw attention to earth hour

Canada seems to be in the lead with about 1 in 600 Canadians participating.

I think USA has only 1 in 1000 people participating (they have a population about 10 times ours).

(Got this figure from digg).

This is quite interesting. It only seems as if a few countries are participating in this activity.

You realise that there are people who have actually gone out of their way to make google black?

I actually hope they keep this as an option of some kind, so google will go black for your login. It's a pity that it's only the front page though.
I have a stylish google black theme that is really cool.

It looks cool.

What's the point if it doesn't make any difference, though? It might make a difference on an old CRT, but most certainly not on an LCD.

But the message is good. Switch off all appliances that you don't need.

Ah, but it does to some of us. I find the default white background too bright -- I'm not a fan of white backgrounds, and the gooogle black scheme is easier on your eyes. Likewise, I have two stylish themes that make the ubuntuforums dark grey or black.

I also have a dark /., dark digg, and a dark grey wikipedia.

The Stylish Extension:https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108

then you can go to http://www.userstyles.org/ where people have produced their own themes for websites. Stylish works by subverting the CSS/HTML code as your browser sees it.

Yeah a black screen on an lcd screen uses MORE power because it has to fully polarize (blackout) the backlight to display black!

Duh google

But i suppose the power saved on crt's offsets the power used by lcd's.

But LCDs use little power anyway, compared to CRTs. And tbh, I don't use google's homepage that much. I just use Firefox's search bar.

There is no way taking a few appliances off standby will save 30% on fuel bills, not unless you have thousands of appliances on your house on standby.

There is so much FUD around carbon footprints and power saving etc.

I can't prove that these are right, but let's face it, one way or another, these applications are sucking up electricity - and thus, yes, they are increasing your carbon footprint. Whether or not they consume 30% of the total consumption is debatable, but I see no harm in switching things off, especially during the night.

It would be possiable to save UP TO 30% but only if your appliances "PIE super HIFI" or "BETAMAX" written on them.

:lolflag:

I choose not to believe it.

But why leave them on if you can just switch them off? It saves costs to you and the environment all in all its a good thing :)

FUD - FUD OFF!!! It's taken two years but a decrease of that percentage has taken place. Don't like the facts, TOUGH ****, they are the FACTS. I was very wasteful I have to admit, 3 CRT's on standby most of the time along with everything else, pretty much everything was like that. Just because you CHOOSE to ignore the fact that the human race is wasteful and is consuming far more of the Earths resources than it needs.

My profile as a consumer has changed dramatically over the last two years. I recycle as much as possible and look at ways that I can help change perceptions about what the human species has done and is doing to the planet.

Quite frankly, if it were left to people like you tigerpants then the drive to the edge of the cliff would be filled with FUD statements, and predictions of another 500 years of oil, but the edge of the cliff is always coming. And I would say with confidence that you would be one of the first to scream and shout about the fact that were heading over a cliff and wanting someone else to sort out the mess.
