Hello everyone!

My M/B is ASRock 775VM800 and my CPU is P4 @3GHz (Prescott).

My problem (and also my parents') is that the fan of the CPU is making too much noise.Yes I'm sure it's the one that causes the problem,I've checked it many times.I don't know if my processor gets too hot so quickly but as soon as I boot up,everyone in the house knows it,especially at night.
What I'd like to have is a silent FAN(as silent as one can be,in a logical price-I'm not an overclocker,I won't use liquid N2 :-P)

Apart of specific propositions,I'd like to know what else I should check about a new FAN besides compatibility with m/b and cpu. Also do I have
to buy with the new FAN that other metal thing below it(the name slips my mind)?

Thank you guys(really) for any answer that may help me make my pc sound less like a helicopter :-P

one you could post in the right place but you could get a fanless heatsink for your processor here is what i found on newegg fanless (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=fanless+&x=0&y=0)

I don't know if I posted in the right place(I don't think this thread worths to be anywhere but here though-so I leave it up to the mods) Thanx for the link!

Perhaps you just need to turn the voltage to your fan down so it'll spin slower. For about 5 bucks you could get a knob (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118217) that will do that for you.

http://c1.neweggimages.com/NeweggImage/productimage/35-118-217-04.jpg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118217)

That's what I did.

I used to have a motherboard that would let me use this program under Windows called Speedfan, but when I replaced my motherboard with this WinFast K7S, it didn't seem to work any more. Buying the above rheostat of sorts helped me out a great deal.

If it spins lower then the cpu won't get hotter? How can I check if my m/b has the right cable connector for that?

Yes, if you lower the speed your CPU will get hotter. You'll have to monitor the temperature of the CPU vs the amount of fan RPMs as you turn the knob to see what the right balance is between sound (fan speed) and CPU heat. Most fans are 3-pin or 4-pin; check your connector and get the appropriate fan controller. FYI I use a fan controller like the one mentioned and it helps, but is not completely silent.

Is that the hyper-threading one ???
If so I have a one too. The problem was I had a very silent fan and even at low torture it was getting hot. Then I bought a humongous Titan fan and it was great because it delivered the cool air more than the old one, but still because of its actual fan area it could run on lover RPM so it was even more quite.

But remember, these CPUs love to overheat, so dont buy those little quiet thing that Radioshack calls "cpu fan".

Yeah, before I bought that little thing, my fan was spinning about 7500 to 8000 RPM, it was f---ing ridiculous!

It now runs at about 3000 RPM, which is what you would get if you bought some cheap heatsink/fan combo to begin with. If you have a loud fan on your computer, it's like having a car without a muffler. Now that's classy!

Yes it's hyperthreading and 64bit too. I think a new fan would be better( I don't have the time to mess around monitoring speed, heat and sound)..

I know How you feel about the noise I have a Pentium D 820 which uses two prescott cores on the same die It sounds like standing next to a jumbo jet I saw this http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Cooler/Retail/Cl-P0401/cl-p0401.asp in a Computer magazine sometime ago.

I dont use it personally i still use the standard fan as I only use my desktop during the day but I did consider buying as it had good reviews it but it was about £50 when I built my machine and I only Paid £75 for the chip 18 months ago so it didn't seem worth it given the cost in the end but it's cheaper now.

If your in the UK
this is the cheapest I found today Inc. VAT on a Google shopping search which coincidently I bought my notebook that I run ubuntu on. here http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?TT-V1

If your lucky enough not to live in the UK It most likely be cheaper just use the best comparison site for where you live.:)

Be sure though if you do buy it check the dimensions under the specification page on the thermal take site link above to see if it fits in your case.
If it wont fit though there are others on the novatech site you could look at.

hope this helps.:)

get a bigger heat sink meant for over clocking, as these have better heat transfer propatys, as they disperse heat better you can run the fan slower without overheating the cpu. using a good thermal compound will also halp greatly

thats OK,
short of creating a fridge around your CPU or "phase change" cooling as the shops call it your never going to get a silent machine the Late P4 and PD's are well know for noisy fans as standard. sod to fit aswell.

try to get one with the most copper you can as it's better than aluminum for heat conduction by a big margin. :guitar:

OK,thank you all guys,I'll take what you told me into consideration.I have to search carefully now.. :-\ I hope my m/b is not too outdated..
I have to disconnect now(I can't hear it any more :-P)

Have a nice day / night !

A few tips:

- Most online shops sort the coolers they sell by socket type. If you know which processor socket your MB has, it should narrow down the search accordingly.
- If your MB is mounted vertically, please bear in mind that it is probably not a very good idea to use a very heavy cooler. The added weight could work as a lever and that would eventually kill your MB.
- As said before: a cooler with a copper core conducts much heat.
- Bear in mind that airflow in a computer case is equally important. If the case is too stuffy, the hot air has nowhere to go.

I use this one (http://www.arctic-cooling.com/cpu2.php?idx=93&disc=). Note that it is meant for AMD, so it will probably not fit on your P4. AC does have an inter variant as well IIRC. Apart from being dirt cheap, it handles its own fan speed. That means that if your computer isn't stressed, the fan does not need to spin. Even if it spins, it is silent. It is somewhat better than the stock cooler, but do not expect any miracles. You cannot use it as a beer fridge as well. :)

The case is open from the one side.
I don't mind change the position of my case to horizontal..

Could you please explain that?

For all you will ever need to know about silencing a PC: www.silentpcreview.com
They've got a good forum too.

oce word - zalman.

That is if they have one for your socket type.

[edit] just checked your mobo socket, s775. There are plenty of very good heatsinks out there, not just at noise, but also for heat dissipation. These guys (http://www.quietpc.com) have a big selection

Although I have never played around with it you can actually fiddle with the setting that controls when the fan is turned on. So maybe setting the heat sensor a bit higher would make it so it would be activated less often and give you at least less time when the fan is really loud. I think there is a post about it somewhere in the forum

If you get a bigger heat sink, and are still concerned about potential overheat issues, you can mount a larger fan to it. A larger fan can move more air at lower RPMs, and therefore will not make as much noise.

He means a company called Arctic cooling the intel LGA775 which you need is here http://www.arctic-cooling.com/cpu2.php?idx=92&disc=

I have never seen this one before it says the sound level is 0.6 sone which is between 25 and 27 DbA which is about the same as the one i Pointed out to your before.

there one on ebay here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380000626329&mpt=1206718095117&tGUID=f5f23af91180a0e204f63706fffae943
or there's one on that novatech site too here http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?AC-APLINE7

It's cheap but arctic cooling are meant to be good
it doesn't say but it's probably got a copper core which the standard intel one has.

the first one looks ok the second one doesn't have much of a heat sink though which is why it weighs less

Hey remember me? I had to clean My desktop out yesterday It was due for one. and for annoyingly I could not get the CPU fan back on one of the push pins kept popping up Doh!, Mind you I had trouble when I built it but my brother managed to get it on for me.

I ordered an Akasa one in the end, look's very similar to yours.
Mine should be here on monday aswell

Hello once again,I also ordered this fan(the one I mentioned before I put it in my old pc used by my father now) :THERMALTAKE CL-P0372 TMG I2
I installed it today and it's super silent.I changed a bit the position of the wires and the 2 hard disks and now everything is as silent as the hill :-P
Now both of the pcs in my house are quiet and none of my parents are complaining anymore(yeah..finally!)

GOROSSI

cool, glad it worked for you my one is pretty quiet as well.

Had I known the stock fan would have been that noisy in the first place I would have used a third party one, but it was just a case of it's in there now, it can stay in there.
