I held my breath and installed Ubuntu and every thing seems to be working.I haven't tried booting up windows yet,but it does give me the option. Thanks for the encouragement to go ahead. I'm just playing around right now.Fast!!! I did let Ubuntu update and install.Is there a firewall running auto or do I need to install myself? Also,virus protection? Thanks,Retiree

Not real sure about the firewall. I know there are some you can run but I don't think the Desktop version of Ubuntu has it built in.
There are virus scanners for linux, But I have never run one on my desktop. I used clamAV on my server for a while. That was primarily to protect the Windows PS's that connected to it.
I believe there are more virus scanners for linux than there are viruses.
I would suggest checking th general forums or even Google for more info on virus protection for Linux.

My advice is to skip the anti-virus if you run Ubuntu. Why ?
They scan primarily for Windows viruses.
There is a high rate of false positives.
Isolation/inoculation is poor.
And currently there are no known active Linux viruses (so there is essentially nothing to detect).

I did find and download program from Avast.com thats for Linux x64,which I am running,but I have not installed it yet.I had great success with this program on windows running XP Pro x64.I'm not going to install unless I have a problem. Thanks for the help,these forums have been a good source of info. So far I have been able to find answers for all of my issues,which have been few.
