Are there any electrical engineers using ubuntu? Just wanted to know if there is a open source version of power system analysis software in ubuntu/linux..

Any info appreciated..

I have used Ubuntu for VHDL Programming in my engineering course. I hope that counts.

If you own a copy of 'Power System analysis and design' by Glover and Sarma, you get a free copy of Powerworld with their book. You can also download this online from here (http://www.powerworld.com/gloversarma.asp). Its for windows but works perfectly under wine.

I should mention that you don't need proof of purchase of the book when downloading it, they just ask for a name and email address. Downloading it like this wouldn't exactly be legal so... I'll let you fill in the blanks.

Read between the lines. Im saying that you don't need a copy of the book but you can still download the program and use it.

Hi, I´m learning VHDL, and I would like to use some graphic aplication for this under Linux. I´ve tried GHDL, but I wonder if there´s there any graphic app.

Also tried to install unsuccesfully FreeHDL, Symphony EDA Sonata, Alliance and XIlinx Webpack :(

And Altera´s Quartus Web Edtion under Wine, but none of this worked....

So, what did you use??

In 2 years, I will be engineer.. :lolflag:

Sorry for the offtopic...

My company uses Ubuntu for the engineer's workstations. (I'm an engineer)

We run:

Altera / Quartus v7.2
Modeltech / Modelsim
and some ASIC synthesis tools.

Something changed in v8.04 and now Quartus just hangs. So we're sticking with v7.10 until either Altera or Ubuntu fixes the problem.

If I figure out the problem with v8.04, I'll post it.

For What It Is Worth:
We've used Ubuntu since v5.x, 6.06, and all versions in between. 8.04 is the first to break Altera / Quartus.

(All these are free)

Electric - does practically everything, feature-packed but not so user friendly: Electric (http://www.staticfreesoft.com/)

Qucs - still in early stages but has some great ideas on digital/analogue simulation (including VHDL testbench autogeneration), very user friendly: Qucs (http://qucs.sourceforge.net/)

KSimus - similar to Qucs, focusing on interactive digital design: KSimus (http://ksimus.berlios.de/)

gEDA - a fantastic layout/design program: gEDA (http://www.geda.seul.org/)

If you're into some VLSI then you could compile yourself 'Magic' : Magic (http://opencircuitdesign.com/)

For analog/digital simulation, Qucs or Electric will serve you well. KSimus is very nice for interactive logic design.

Yup, I've been using Quartus under earlier versions of Ubuntu without problems as well. Having trouble with 8.04 unfortunately.

Please do post if you find a work around for this.

look at alteraforums.com - I've been posting there and so have others....

v8.0 seems to work better in Hardy than 7.2

Make sure all of your env variables are set, and that DNS / licensing is working without a hitch.
