So maybe this has been asked several times before, but I was confused about the various options available.

I am not sure which options work best with gutsy.

My parents use yahoo on windows to chat and I have to log out and get into Vistas to voice chat with them. Please can someone advise me on how I can voice chat+webcam with them while still under Ubuntu. They can only use yahoo as that is the only one they have been trained for :)

Thanks,

Monika

I think the closest you can get to do yahoo voice chat on linux is gyachi (http://gyachi.sourceforge.net/) (Gutsy package is available here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2582647&postcount=1)). However, due to the fact that yahoo uses a proprietary audio codec for audio conferencing, the voice chat capabilities of gyachi are not good and don't work for everyone. If you can instruct your parents on how to use skype, that would be a better option for voice chat, in my opinion (and maybe for webcam too, if your webcam is supported).

EDIT: I forgot to say, I believe gyachi only supports voice chat on chatrooms, not on private audioconference rooms, but you could try it anyway.

use gizmo project for linux (http://gizmo5.com/pc/download/) it can voice call your yahoo contacts, just type in username@yahoo.com in the dial textbox.

My webcam works on Yahoo fine, with Kopete.

I don't know about sound, as the other party involved didn't know how to hook up her microphone...
