If (fill in the distro) is ever going to compete with the more modern linux distributions it has the realise that there are things that should just work

I have seen this rant more than once here and I thought it was funny and relevant when i tried to get WPA going on one of my clients older XP installs and had to go through a long hunt/process to even ENABLE WPA support in XP. Funny how people get used to Linux and forget how bad they really had it with Windows problems...:)

I think Linux spoils people, and then even the slightest problem arises and were like WHAT!?!

I just installed xp on an old laptop, and left it on the internet while I went for tacos, got home and it had contracted some weird problem. XP is like the harlot of the internet :lolflag:

Lol,

Yall needs some contraception and regular checkups at the docs to make sure ya dont get no ITI's (Interweb transmitted infections)

Yes i agree we do have it good with ubuntu, for those of use just starting out it is a bit of a journey but in the end the rewards are huge and impressive.

I feel safe with my ubuntu on teh interweb

Yeah, it's kind of good to go and see Microsoft's cryptic instructions and difficult interfaces regarding some things, and know that even if you have problems, at least you're not paying for the privilege of having them.

Yeah I know what you mean I vaguely remember how much it sucked having to look for codecs and drivers and installing them getting errors that didn't make any sense. Having things just work out of box is definitely and interesting experience.

Agreed. I installed XP on a virtual machine, and cannot believe how many updates it needs, almost every day there is some new update to download. Plus I just feel so weird, and maybe a little paranoid sitting in front of a windows machine anymore.

this might be a bit OT, but if you don't have SP2 installed on a fresh XP install then the FW is turned off and you'll get a worm generally within 20 minutes, something like sasser, the best thing to do is a reinstall!!

here's one of those update cd's that will put all the needed updates on a cd for you so you can apply it to a fresh install (i've never used it, i haven't used windows for years :D i heard it's good though)

Nah, it's easy to protect yourself under Windows. Just don't connect to the internet.

I remember my old Win XP laptop... I got it just after Sasser etc had come out, so anti-virus programs didn't work against it out of the box, and had to be updated. While my anti-virus was updating, I got the bug which completely crippled my brand new computer and took me days to fix.

Aaah, Linux. I've almost forgotten what an anti-virus program is.

I install XP all the time still at work and for people. The trick is:

1. is there a router between me and the cable/dsl/whatever? OK step 2
2. download AVG free and install (open IE and go to free.grisoft.com and nowhere else). Working? OK step 3
3. turn on MS updates. Let it download a zillion updates, reboot, let it download more, reboot, let if download till these's nothing else.
4. go to mozilla.com and get forefox, then hide the IE icon.
5. might as well get spybod S&D and install.
6. Done

Now that may sound easy to some of you, hard to others, but that simple process has let me keep about 80 win boxes from being infected. ...well that and the threat of death to users that cruise porn/warez/whatever. Well OK, in 2 years one box got infected because auto updates were turned off by the user, and another got infected by the user installing a "free" wallpaper.

Yep...I install alot of XP boxes for clients, many a week, and I do have my "process" which seems fairly sucessful so far. :)

It was just the experience of leaving for like 30 minutes and coming back to problems this particular case spurred me to think about how lucky I am to be among the people who use linux for their desktop! :)

I switched to Ubuntu fairly recently....(about 2-3 months ago) and am amazed at how quickly your forget about general Windows things..Haven't reinstalled, defragged, virus scanned, or been forced to restart after a crash for about 3 months - How do I remember these things? My friend down the road has Windows XP installed.
