OK, new to Ubuntu and to the forums, where does the whole coffee analogy thing come from? Is it an Ubuntu thing or just a forums thing? Does the coffee analogy come from the default desktop theme colours or do the colours come from the coffee connection?

I think it's because a lot of code is written late at night through to the early hours, and coffee keeps one awake.

This is certainly true in my case.

I think it is because Ubuntu is brown, and so is coffee.

Forum FAQ:

What's the deal with coffee cups/beans and the funny titles?

Beans are posts. The post/bean count can be turned off by the user if so desired.

There tends to be a close connection between geeks and coffee, so that's where the theme came from. Yes, we know not everyone likes coffee, but it's just a silly thing.

See http://hackles.org for the whole strip, I just quickly grabbed some coffee references.

So is the coffee connection just a forums thing then, rather than an Ubuntu thing?

I dunno, but I think I need more coffee and donuts.

It is a general observation of geeks/programmers.

I am a programmer, but I have never tasted coffee before, so it isn't a core requirement.

I don't have a link to the thread handy, but a former staff member came up with the coffee theme and did most of the artwork. This was a while back. I think the main intent was to do something that personalized this forum a bit over the standard vBulletin look and feel.

Good link to historic post -- I like that. I like reading about the early days of Ubuntu and the Ubuntu forums. Makes me appreciate many of the current mods, ideas, and opinions here that much greater.

A while ago, I had attempted to make a forum history thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=651901

Anyone know where I can find the great April Fools Day prank history? It sounds intriguing ... and with April Fools Day just looming around the corner...

I have seen bits of it but forget where. It wasn't pretty...
