Hi, is it possible to install Linux to a portable hard drive and use it on different computers? What I am looking for is a distribution that would auto-detect hardware on booting (rather like a live cd).
Thanks in advance

Thanks for the suggestion but what I am looking for is a distribution that installs to the disk (rather than a live cd distribution which is an image that runs of it). This would allow me to save files and settings etc (including additional applications). I think that Knoppix used to do this but it has been removed from the more recent versions of the installer.

Damn Small Linux (http://damnsmalllinux.org) has a "frugal install" which I think is what you are looking for.

Puppy does a good job at auto detecting the hardware as well in my opinion.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think that I will try DSL and Puppy.
