After using ubuntu for a year I've yet to come across an internet tv app. like tvu, sopcast, or tvants for linux does such an app exist?

Sopcast works.
Search gsopcast with google. Sopcast is not free software.

You could try the internet TV screenlet which can be found here:
http://screenlets.org/index.php/Category:UserScreenlets
You'll need to install the screenlet manager which is here:
http://screenlets.org/index.php/Download
Both are free.

Sopcast works nicely in Ubuntu. You have to set the GUI up properly though. See my guide here:
