You want it to send you an email? How exactly do you want to be notified?

(I use Opera, which is also a mail client, so it lets me know when the gmail account I have it set to gets new mail. I suppose there are other apps that will do this.)

No, I mean that something notifies me that a new mail has arrived..., something like the notification MSN messenger gives you when you have a new mail at hotmail.

I think there are small app's written specifically for this, though I'm not sure if they're in the repo's or not :)

If you're using Firefox, you can use either Gmail Manager or Gmail Notifier. Both will notify you of new mail.

For the Ubuntu desktop, I just looked at cgmail, which is in the repositories. I liked it, but I don't really need one outside of the browser. I know there are a couple of others for the desktop in the repos too, but I'm not familiar with them.

Anyway, one of these should do the trick for you...

If you use Xfce, the mail watch panel plugin works great.

cGmail gets my vote. One of the best mail apps ever.

Check GNOME Mail aka cgmail (http://cgmail.tuxfamily.org/)
