View Full Version : Man, a font change makes a big difference!

I'm always puttering around with my desktop, trying to get that "perfect" look (aren't we all?).
One thing I'd not done, though, was change my system font. So I hopped over to Gnome-Look and snagged Zekton (it's the 2nd on "highest rated"). Set it as my default wherever possible, refreshed.
Holy hell, it's like a new system! I never realized how much of a factor the default font face is.

Screenshots before and after? I'd like to see how much of a change this is.

Fonts make or break a good gui. I'm constantly changing them and searching for new ones. They're Grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!

It really does. Personally, I don't use any eye candy, and I have Verdana set as my default for everything. Very crisp, clean looking and easy to read.

It doesn't come across particularly well in screenshots, I don't think. It's more the fact that everything went from smooth and round to sharp and angular (ranging from window titles to menus to dialogs) that suddenly made a STARK difference in aesthetics.
I'd say that changing system fonts ranks below changing your GTK theme in terms of affecting the "feel" of your desktop, above wallpaper/emerald/icons.
Regardless, here's two screens. I changed icons/gtk as well, but I think the difference is still apparent. If not, shaddap.

I change just about everything on the system but never the fonts.
It makes a huge difference.
The default fonts really could use some improvement.
I now use "comic sans ms" and it looks 10 times better.

Open up a terminal and type:
sudo nautilus
in the top bar enter
fonts:///
copy paste the font there.
To change it go to system -> preferences -> appearance and then go to the fonts tab.

Hmm, trying out the font..looks strange. Not bad, but strange. Strange enough that I'll stay with it for a day or two!

Hrm..Why not?
I happen to think that the Liberation font set is possibly one of the best sets of fonts ever produced, far outweighing *anything* that MS have ever done in that field.
I have Liberation set as my default system font set, and it looks so crisp and clear....

Hrm..Why not?.....'snip'
If you are using a GPL-licensed font in a document the font makes your entire document subject to GPL to. I don't think my company would like me to license our internal documents with GPL.
Would be cool though if Microsoft have written their Vista code with a GPL-licensed font :).

SomeGuyDude,
What icons are you using in those screenshots? I really like the ones you've got showing in nautilus.

Actually, using a GPL font doesn't force you to make the document GPL, too.
At least that's what the following link told me: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#FontException

I've been using it with Conky for a while now:
BEFORE

AFTER
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/6388/afterkt7.th.jpg (http://img225.imageshack.us/my.php?image=afterkt7.jpg)
And liked it since Day 1.

Yeah I know about that exception but I an see a couple of problems with it.
First the developer of the font in question has to add that 'font exception' to each of his files in the GPL released package, then you as a user need to check that the 'exception' is really there (not every one even know about this) and even now we are not even sure that this will be legel since that 'exception' even if approved it's still experimental.
So as I stated before, I won't use a GPL-licensed font in any of my official documents. I could use one in my themes though.

SomeGuyDude,

Black & White 2 style: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/black-white+2+Style?content=72619
I love monochrome, but B&W 2 Gloss looks like hell on a predominantly white/grey theme.

Now I am using the liberation fonts. They look great!
Except for the mono one (I don't like how the asterisk looks)
so I am still using monospace for that.
