New laptop what do yall think?

Okay sometime this summer i am going to get a new laptop. From what i have heard people are loving the lenovo laptops and i just dont know what to choose. This is the one that i was looking LInk (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834146333)
my price range right now is about under 1.300 i am just looking for a good deal tell me what yall think.

Hardware looks decent. i dont think you'll run into many problems using linux on there. Id go for that over my Compaq Presario F500 lol

what i like about lenovo thinkpad is that ibm/lenovo has been using linux distros for years so i have herd there are not problems ecept fingerprint scanner doesnt work but thats not that big of a deal

Have you prices a comperable intel based HP DV67xx series laptop? I think you might find something a bit more powerful for the same $. HP dv6700, Intel T8100, 2 gig ram, 250GB drive, nvidia 8400 graphics w/256mb, AG & N wireless, built in webcam & mic, lightscribe DVD burner .... $993. $300 is a lot of money to leave on the table.

Just throwing out something to look at...

ps. Mine works great with Ubuntu. I have Intel graphics which would save you $50 if you went with it. Not sure if all the nvidia bugs are worked out, but I think they are by now.

I'd recommend getting an HP too. For that budget, look at laptops with at least 2 gigs of ram.

I agree. Not so much on the HP aspect, but the specs don't seem killer considering the price. I paid $700 for a Gateway, dual core, with a 17" display. Really haven't had an issues running Linux on it. To me, personally, $1300 is a lot to pay for a laptop unless it has smoking specs.

Thinkpad T61's are awesome. I have the T61p version and I love it! Everything works on it. No more tweaking to get a certain hardware working (wireless).

All in all, I love it.

I've also read that the CPUs are socket P, so in case you want to upgrade your CPU to a Penryn, then it works (as long as the bios supports it)

Also, I've bought the version with only 1gb of ram and 80gb of HD space which saved me a lot of money. Then I just go to my local computer shop and bought 2x 2gb of ram plus a 200 GB HD. The cost came up a lot cheaper. My T61p came up to 1300 all together. Stick with Lenovo...you won't regret it :)

If those are the actual specs I would say go for it.

Thinkpads are very well know for their durabilty. Very few die, most just get retired. Theire are still plenty of Thinkpad 600 owners out there.

Dell inspirons very good. 100% Ubuntu compatible, even softmodem works. Got a 1420

HP bad... geforce go 7xxx not compatible. Got one and had to sell it.

also, drivers for win XP are non existant if you "need" to install XP instead of Vista.

I recommend the thinkpad. I have one myself and they are extremely reliable and durable. I also agree that buying more ram pre-installed is a bit of a rip-off since you can do the upgrade yourself for a lot less. Not sure about the hard drive though, because I think you have to buy a new bay, but I don't really know.

One other thing to consider is that a 14.1inch thinkpad might be better if you are looking for mobility. Just a thought.

I'd thoroughly recommend ThinkPads. I've had the x60 for the past few months and love it. Its a solid machine compared to many i've used before.

I've also just upgraded it (first time with a laptop for me). Gone from 1gb to 4gb ram and 80gb to 250gb HD and its flying :) As a sidenote, I was very surprised how low the prices were for the upgrades compared to the last time I upgraded my Desktop.

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 2GB per slot

The hard drive was the easiest part to upgrade on the Thinkpad. One screw releases the drive caddy. Just unsrew the drive from the caddy, attach it to the new drive and plugin it back in.

Also the support pages on the Lenovo site are great for info on upgrades. There are videos showing how to change/remove virtually all parts.

The UltraBay would be one way to go, but i wanted to increase the standard drive to avoid adding bulk and having the extra storage while still mobile.

The X60 (and i think all recent ThinkPads) use a 2.5" sata drive. The one i just installed was the Western Digital Scorpio 250GB (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=314)

A laptop is a highly personal thing. I loved working with Zareason when I ordered mine and got exactly what I wanted. A lot of hackers in the FSF use IBM's. So you could always check that route as well.

Woah thanks. I just looked at that and it kicks my one-year old HP NX 7300 everywhere for cheaper. Now I just have to find a relative in America to pick it up for me.
