I understand that xserver-xorg is the de facto standard base for GUI on Linux distos, but I was curios to know if there was another alternative or something lighter weight?

No matter what you go with, it's going to be the same X server...
There is kdrive, and you can always set up a custom xf86, but your best bet is to simply remove all the drivers you don't use from Xorg - it's modular for a reason.

Virtually all of Xorg's device driver modules are from XF86. ;)
