Hey look at this!

Some of the exciting things to look forward to in GNOME 2.24 will hopefully include:

* a new version of GNOME's Ekiga VoIP client featuring a revamped user interface and SIP presence support;
* the Empathy instant messaging client utilising the Telepathy communications framework;
* the often-requested column and list views in GNOME's File Manager;
* the completion of the port from GNOME-VFS to GVFS; and
* bug fixes, performance improvements and memory improvements throughout the desktop.

GNOME's roadmap details the developers' plans for the next release cycle, and the GNOME 2.24 release schedule will appear soon.

Hey look at this!

any chance of supporting different wallpapers for different desktops?

or even the mouse scroll wheel to set number of lines scrolled? so we can fight arthritis.

It's "truly amazing" apparently. Check out this Softpedia article (http://news.softpedia.com/news/GNOME-2-22-A-Truly-Amazing-Desktop-80584.shtml) for a review and screenshots.

What's amazing is finally having support for the Freedesktop.org Desktop Trash Can specification. Now if only Nautilus had the ability to use "last active view" like Thunar and Konqueror and Metacity had the possibility to shade/unshade windows with the scroll wheel and use right/middle mouse button on the maximize button to maximize unidirectionally. I remember the epic struggle to get "always on top" implemented in Metacity, not much has changed since then.

You don't (unless you want to compile it all from source, see http://live.gnome.org/Jhbuild).

No, this is GNOME we're talking about.

Never - new gnome releases appear in the next version of Ubuntu. So in this case 2.22 will be in 8.04 (out in April).

To bad they won't be making gutsy packages.

I don't want to build from source and hardy final is still 40 days away.

When kde 4 came out you could easily install it in ubuntu 7.10 by adding some repository and then install the kde4 core, I guess no such thing for gnome 2.22 will be available?

There will not be. If you want Gnome 2.22, you will have to run Hardy or download it yourself to Gutsy.

KDE4 was a rather different release to Gnome 2.22. A new gnome release happens every 6 months - in fact Ubuntu's release schedule is designed so that it comes out soonish after gnome.

The screen shots look great. I can't wait to try Cheese. I have a web cam on my laptop, but have never used it.

I used Synaptic to get Cheese. It's damn cool. And I'm running Gutsy's default kernel.
