Yesterday i installed and configured Ekiga-softfone. And i found it to be quite good, and so i want to use the program :D

Problem is;
99% of my friends is using windows and skype. By reading a bit, i kinda found out that i cant call skype from ekiga....

So if i wanna use Ekiga, and not Skype i have noone to call....
what should i do, i see no alternative but to use skype.

Unfortunately most of the world is using Skype.
You can either convince your friends to switch to Ekiga, it is also available the windows version to download, or install skype yourself.
The latest beta version for linux supports videocalls as well.
You can find it here:
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/linux/beta/

lol, i was thinking the ghostbusters too. :lolflag:

anyways, as far as i know, you can only call skype contacts using skype. luckily skype is available for linux. just goto http://www.skype.com/ and go to the downloads section. you should see a download for ubuntu (ignore which version of ubuntu they say its for).

download the .deb file. then from the terminal, go to the folder that you saved the .deb file to, and run:

sudo dpkg -i filename.deb

I think anyone that sees the title of this thread would immediately think of responding with Ghostbusters :)

I also thought "Ghostbusters!"... :)

Skype is proprietary, closed-source software and it uses its own proprietary, encrypted protocol. Skype (the company) doesn't publish their protocol, they in fact make it difficult on purpose to use the Skype network with any other software than Skype itself.

People have tried to reverse-engineer the Skype protocol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skype_Protocol) but it's not easy, and it hasn't been cracked yet (AFAIK), so there's no other option than to use Skype if your friends are unwilling to use open-protocol software.

...as I wrote in my previous post Ekiga is available for Windows as well, so you just need to convince your friends to use Ekiga, not to switch to Linux.
It is still a beta version and can be downloaded from here:

That's why I don't use Ekiga, my friends would need to convince all of their contacts to install Ekiga as well, and so on, not going to happen any time soon.

I'v e never used skype or ekiga, but can't they work the way MSN or Yahoo or Amsn work? Is there no program for Linux other than skype that can connect to the skype network?

Nope, Skype has a locked-in network full of proprietary protocols and infrastructure.
