I'm a total n00b when it comes to networking in general and especially in Linux (I can proudly say that I know that you can find your IP address with ifconfig in a terminal :) .)
I would like to get up to speed on this. Not only would I like to get a good understanding of how things work (how DNS, NFS, TCP/IP work, etc.) but also the commands on how to set this up (how to export partitions, what the different config files do, what they mean and how to change settings.)
It would be great if it was a very reputable publisher such as O'Reilly, those books are ubiquitous. Also, I'd like something that is not distro-specific (I'd like to be able to do the same thing - more or less - on a Red Hat PC, Ubuntu or Gentoo.) Any suggestions?
