I see things periodically with the dots separated from the ring in ubuntu's logo, or with things otherwise shifted. I've always recognized it and seen it as 3 people holding hands in a circle. Is that what it is? is it just me?

I think that's what it's supposed to be.

I dunno...that whole hand holding circle thing has always made me a tad nervous...

I really do not understand what's wrong with the logo. It is called "circle of friends". Or maybe there are some lonely persons, who are scared of having friends?
