Hello all.
I'm a relatively new Ubuntu user (about a month now I thinK), and I'm looking for some advice concerning the best way to go about learning the ropes and getting started with application development in the community. My short term goal, at the moment, is to be able to download the source of some existing programs and start picking them apart, making a couple basic changes here and there, in order to get a feel for the way real, complex, usable applications are structured and implemented. I figure at this point that'll be the quickest way to really get on my feet, and start linking more theory to real application.
I'm a first year computer science major, and relatively comfortable/competent once I actually get into the code (Java, C#, C++... I know how to program). What I'm running into at the moment is just a barier getting started... I'm still not clear on Ubuntu's "compile from the source" installation process, or even if that's entirely relevant to what it is I want to do. I've been reading up a lot recently on commands and such (gotta love google), but I can't seem to find anything that just outlines the basic concepts of getting started in open source development, things that seem to be assumed knowledge everywhere else.
So to give this thread a little more concrete goal: I've downloaded and installed MonoDevelop, and I've downloaded the source code to Banshee, and now I'd like to make some trivial changes (again, just for the educational value of it) and compile it... how on earth do I go about doing that? I
Sorry if this seems a little ridiculous, I just need a push in the right direction, or mabye a couple links to where I can find the information I'm looking for.
Thanks,
Speaker
