View Full Version : Live Search: Lousy or Up-To-No-Good?

Just an observation and was wondering if anyone had noticed this at all.

I just did a fresh install of Windows XP on my fiancée's machine ( she wants to play Sims 2 :P ) and, perhaps obviously, the first thing I did after switching a bunch of stuff off I opened Internet Explorer and did a search for Firefox ( as it is her preferred browser ) from the search bar ( which they obviously stole ^.^ ). The results made me wonder..

Every single link found by Live was a link to a non-official ( some known scam ) Firefox sites. The official Mozilla site? Nowhere to be seen. The same search on Google, the first 8 links are those to the official site.

Strangely, going directly to the site ( search.live.com ) and searching Firefox gives different results, including the official site at the top.

So what do you think? Microsoft playing dirty by linking people who want to try Firefox to scam/malware sites or just a blip in their search engine which only occurs when using IE7's search bar? I know what my conclusions are :)

Live search does suck but I don't think that it's a Microsoft scam, I go all legit hits.

This was from a fresh install of XP and using the search bar of Internet Explorer 7, not through the site. I'll get you a screen-shot once the other half gets off the Sims.

Some other factors must be taking effect because on my girlfriends machine searching for 'firefox' in live.search.com yields all the "scam" sites, even in Firefox 3b3.
On my machine, IE7 gives me the scam ones and Firefox 2 gives me the proper addresses even if I copy and paste the address out of IE.

This is what I see in IE7:

By the way, I didn't un-propose or anything. 'Girlfriend' is just easier to type :P

( which they obviously stole ^.^ ).
Didn't Opera have it first?:)

Anyway, I reckon it's just lousy. What annoys me is that my school has it as the default and we can't change any settings, but they've blocked live.com so now we can't use the search bar at all. Complete waste!

Sounds like my workplace. Good thing Portable Applications (http://portableapps.com/) exist :)

I'd accept that it was just lousy if only it was consistent with its results..

I've used them at school before but now they've blocked all executables :(
