I stumbled across this while searching for stuff on DD-WRT.

What do people make of it? Is it sour grapes? A falling out between developers? Or is DD-WRT really stabbing the F/OSS community in the back?

I don't know I love DD-WRT and it has worked great for me. But misusing the GPL has to be stopped.

Although he can sell a commercial version, its illegal for him to try to make GPL code proprietary and if he has done this it must be stopped.

Not really, DD-WRT is the only product that doesn't brick most routers. The same can not be said for Open-WRT which hardly works at all and like turn your router into a paper weight.

The add ons for DD-WRT is something I have no interest in at all such as the QoS stuff, I don't care. DD-WRT is hardly closed source as you can download the source code and change a lot of stuff.

In conclusion a guy who works for a closed source company (http://www.bitsum.com/about.php) creating a closed source application to compress closed source binaries for a closed source operating system bitching about this is a hypocrite.

He's sprouting jibbish without any facts to back it up. If he's so pissed at contributing why not contribute to open-wrt in the first place.

although i've donated $15 to the project previously, i'd most certainly pay for a license if it went that direction. big deal.

The Big Deal is not that DDR-WRT became a commercial project, but rather that above link claims that ey violated the GPL by not distributing the source of all programs included in eir distribution, or for example by modifying the license. As ey is not the exclusive copyright holder ey cannot relicense the project without consent of all other copyright holders.
