custom kernel

I am installing gentoo on my core duo macbook and I am up to the part of installing a kernel I know *how* to install a kernel and *how* to customize one but I was wondering if anyone could tell me or point me in the direction of any documentation that tells which settings to use to best optimize my system.

Well get a list of your hardware, then only build the kernel against your hardware.
