This (http://www.xs4all.nl/~jvdkuyp/flash/see.htm) is what happens when you don't shut down your computers at night.

Don't fool yourselves. It happens in Linux, too.

But the wife and I use our desktops to heat the computer room :-D

(just kidding, of course)

Lol. For a second I thought this was one of those turn your PCs off at night threads to conserve energy.

Don't turn your PCs off at night ppl. Think of the Icons.

So did I.
That was quite cool. Even though the sound was off sync. :(

Leaving it on to chew through malariacontrol.net work units all night is even better than conserving energy.

This explains why the positions of the desktop icons get messed up occasionally.

I use idesk, along with lib_ideskmod_no-iconwar.so. I don't think I have to worry.

I can't shutdown my computer at night.

My CPU fan is starting to die, if it sits idle for more then a few hours, it grinds it's bearings to death the next time it starts. I have to smack it with a pencil a few times to get it to stop whining at me.

I wanna replace it, but it spins, and my processor is more than capable of being passively cooled anyways

So for now, my icons are safe. (Although, in Ubuntu, I only have 3 icons on my desktop :P)

I am safe, at last, too. All icons have now been shot.

Do you use a system tray, though? Same problem.

Hmm, I use a dock but I can autohide it, does that count? ;)

I just can't get rid of that 1 icon for my NTFS drive. So I'd like to see what it does.

In Fluxbox, there is a total blank desktop.

If you want to get rid of that desktop icon (or all mounted drives) try this:

run gconf-editor

apps/nautilus/desktop

uncheck volumes_visible

I only have my laptop running when I download torrents. There are no icons on the desktop because I use Compiz to draw my desktop (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=577144) so my LCD won't explode.

I wonder what's better for the environment; putting computers off, or have them run ClimatePrediction.net.

That was the primary reason I switched to Linux and never used icons again.

Thank you. I didn't know if it was possible to do that and still have access to the volume in Nautilus.

So now I don't have any icons except the ones in my dock. I guess they'll be fighting each other.
