According to the acid3 browser (http://www.webstandards.org/action/acid3/)test firefox 3 beta 3 only gets a 58/100 for following the web standards.

for reference:

epiphany only gets a 50/100 and opera fails with 46/100

What gives?

I always thought firefox and opera where good at following web standards.

I'm pretty sure Opera 9 has passed the test, as far as I remember. IE8 has also just managed to pass it, and Safari is good to go as well.

ACID3 is only few weeks old and it's designed so that current browsers aren't getting too high scores. And browsers aren't perfect in any way.

Also, you're comparing newest beta build of Firefox against old stable build of Opera.
Newest Opera build gets 65/100...

And apparently newest webkit builds are getting 87/100.

Here is a also a new css3 selectors test: http://disruptive-innovations.com/zoo/css3tests/selectorTest.html#target
Newest Opera build is currently the only browser which works correctly on that test.

The older css3 test is here: http://www.css3.info/selectors-test/

You're talking about ACID2.

FIrefox 3 currently does not pass the third Acid Test since it was built with compliance for the second Acid Test standards, this is because the third Acid Test came out rather recently and because it was made in such a way that the current web browsers would not be able to pass it.

Do not blame Firefox 3 for not passing the test, instead thank it for completing 58/100 which is a rather large advantage in the long run since no other browser(I have seen) comes close.

As far as I know, acid3 isn't officially finished. You should be comparing it on acid2...

It was released yesterday.

FF3b3 got 57 when I tried yesterday.

I IMed a Mac-using friend about it, and he tested Safari and the new WebKit. Safari got a 39. New WebKit got 83.

On the CSS3 Selectors test (out of 578):
FF3b3: 367
Safari: 342
WebKit: 370

You need to wait until it gives you the huge popup with all errors listed to count the test as finished.
