What is your laptop bag, how you have ended with buying it?

Hello everyone.
I am looking to buy a laptop bag, probably I will look at Ubuntu Ogio Messenger Bag

What I want from my laptop bag is as follow: It can well protect my laptop and an external hard disk plus usual additional accessories, it should be light weight, It should have a very ergonomic design as I have no extra powerful muscles :( and a well ergonomic design can help very much.


If you have a laptop bag specially a messenger laptop bag please share your experience with me.

let me know how you ended buying that specific bag and to what degree you are satisfied with it.

I had some messenger bag for my laptop. I hated it because my 15" laptop weight was killing my shoulders with this bag. I can't understand why someone would use a messenger bag for a laptop. When i wore one, it was constantly bumping because of my legs, and bumping is not good for a laptop.
Now i have a laptop backpack from CaseLogic - it's very comfortable, easy on the back (in contrast to a messenger bag), and you wouldn't believe a 15" laptop fits inside. And it's not bumping on my back all the time like the previous one.

I have a pretty nice Targus backpack for my laptop. I'm a student so this lets me carry my laptop along with my books/pens/pencils/etc... All on my back so it is nice and easy to carry. I highly recommend it.

It's really padded so I could throw it and not worry. I can jam a power cable in if I need it (into the side) but I get 4 hours so I usually just put papers there. I have the 15.4 model and a 13.3 laptop so it gives a bit of inside room if I ever get a small external hdd.

I have a Targus Messenger bag, it's big, comfy and you wouldn't believe all the stuff you can put in it.
I also have a backpack the advantage is that you don't get tired of wearing it all on a single shoulder and you don't have bend due the weight, and I don't mean the bag weight but the laptop and the external HHD, and all of the other stuff.
The targus messenger bag weighs about 2.5-3 pounds. The backpack is a cheap one, but I have a laptop sleeve that protects it when on it.

So, messenger= style; backpack= good posture, no bursitis and you'll feel lighter.

I have a timbuk2 bag I got for a graduation present that I love. It holds my 15.4" wide screen notebook perfect along with all the books etc. I need. I toss mine around a lot and it hardly even has a spec of dirt on it. On their website you can completly customize them as far as colors, fabrics, accessories and pretty much everything. I would definetly check them out, not really cheap but totally worth it in my opinion.

What type of battery do you have? My laptop battery can barely get two hours, though I think it has degraded over the past 8 months.
I don't know how to find what "type" but it's in a Sony SZ series. I turn the brightness all the way down (which is still quite well lit) and wireless on and active (just not constant streams) I use powertop to monitor what's killing what and I have a custom kernel with the powertop patch that makes it so the kernel isn't waking up so much (which is a "bug").

Works well for when I put it in my rucksack. I really don't just carry my laptop and when I do I just carry it in there. Once day I"ll get a nice case but it works well for what I want.

I use a Swissgear backpack style laptop case, it's great I can put my 15.4" computer in it and still have room for software, books, and accessories. I bought it because it was on sale for $20 at Best Buy and I haven't regretted it for one second there is no way I would go back to the messenger style they are too heavy and don't have enough room for everything I want to put in it.

I use a sling backpack I got at work. There's no model number or anything anywhere, but there's a little itty bitty tag that says "VTX" It's muuuuch more comfortable than Swiss Army (or whatever...) messenger bag and Targus purse-lookin' messenger bag I was using before.

I have a Jansport backpack that's made for a laptop. Since I'm still in school, it works out fine. I can cram all of my books and my laptop into it easily. There's also more pockets than you can shake a stick at.

I have one of the Targus backpacks... goes with me everywhere and rather comfortable most of the time, despite the heaviness from the tons of stuff I have in that thing! (Gotta be about 50 pounds or more! I should weigh it sometime...)

My preference with most bags where I need to carry a lot is a backpack. Plus, they don't usuallly look as obvious as other kinds of bags.

That's one reason why i bought this backpack, like i said, it's a real eye catcher (won't recomend it to shy folk), it became even anoying that some people actually asked me 'what is that on your back?' so i got me some stickers and wrote 'yes, i'm a backpack' on it.
People stopped asking (at least the ones smart enough to read) but they can't stop staring at it.
Not sure what capacity it has, most be around 50 liter or so, but plenty of space it has :-)

The common advice these days is to get a backpack because it <em>doesn't</em> look like a laptop bag. Supposedly that makes it less tempting to thieves.

I have a SwissGear backpack; for the money, I couldn't get more storage (pockets everywhere, including a compartment specifically for my iPod and accessories).

Having used a "standard" laptop bag many times in my former life as a sports reporter, I can say for certain that the backpack is much better ergonomically. Mine has padding on the side that rests against my back, which is quite nice.

I got my laptop bag free with my laptop. It's very good, and protects everything inside sufficiently. It could be better though, since there isn't much space inside to put anything else in. Thats why I shudder in fear whenever I put my external harddrive along with my laptop in my laptop bag.

Err... I went out and bought the cheapest bag I could find which would fit my laptop and its power lead. :p

To be fair though, I didn't buy the laptop to be portable, and only intended it to be static (wanted to save on space at university). I hindsight though I wish I had of gotten a desktop and damned the space!

R.E.load bags make THE BEST bags you can buy. My messenger bag for actual messengering is a R.E.load bag, and I've also got one of their laptop bags, it's perfect. They can be a little bit pricey but they're hand made in Philly/Seattle by a really great group of people. http://www.reloadbags.com Highly recommended. I have a couple bags depending on the situation:

If I am going to meet a client then I might just pack the laptop in a sleeve and go with that. I use a Chrome sleeve, but it is nothing worth writing about.

Is a compact messenger bag. This is the bag I use for normal day to day. It can easily fit 12 and 15 inch laptops but is compact and comfortable enough to wear all day. I have never tried to fit a 17" laptop in it, but I have managed 3 12" laptops with sleeves though that was a tight fit. I have had my mini metro for about 6 years now with daily use, these things are made to last.

The amphib pro is not a day to day pack, but great as a travel pack and extremely protective. It is between the Metro and the Kremlin in size and works well for hiking and day trips, not so well for biking. I tend to only use this one when I am expecting to need extra protection for the contents, but it does that well. I will use it as a checkin on plane trips as well
