espeak "I can type whatever I want."
Giving that thing non-English song lyrics makes me feel good about my singing skills by comparison.

Another thing to try:

mplayer -vo caca videofile.divx

Try turning off ESD in Preferences > Sound. If you have any other sound-making programs open, close them and try again.

I made the same mistake first - turn off whatever it is you are listening to - it will work then - you will have a computer voice saying whatever it is you type in the terminal - its funny to write a familiar rhyme or phrase

Wow I am sorry for derailing this into an espeak thread. :)

Yeah it reminded me of war games as well. It is alot of fun if you go somewhere like a pc cafe.
If you get a bunch of errors normally that means something else is using sound.

I have a bunch of samples from wargames integrated into my sound scheme, instead of the windows start sound I have the whirring of the WOPR.

Ok, a really neat program to play with is Sonic Visualiser. It lets you look at spectrographs of audio files. It's really interesting if you are into recording music. I can actually "see" when certain instruments and voices come in, that is if you fine tune it enough.
