View Full Version : Need screenshots for a new book

First off, I realize I'm not well known(here at least), so I'll go ahead and formally introduce myself. My name is Jordan, and I've been using Linux for four years and Ubuntu for three. While I still use Windows to play games, past that I'm full-time Ubuntu, and even managed to get my mom to use Ubuntu, and she hasn't turned back since! This summer I'm also planning on doing some training and taking the UCP certification tests.

I've started writing a book all about Linux. I'm titling it Migrating from Windows to Linux(assuming that title isn't taken already) and it's going to go over just about everything to do with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and CentOS distros of Linux. This is including everything from how to install it to how to customize it, going through every menu, every option and explaining exactly what everything does. I also go into the command line, since some of the things I show how to do involves using that anyways, but since this is for migrating users I'm trying to stay out of the "scary" command line as much as I can.

Since this mainly covers the GUI, I'm trying to focus more on pictures than words. To that end I've already started taking tons of screenshots, and I know I'll need a ton more.

The part where I ask for help is if anyone is willing to donate screenshots of whatever part of either of those three distros interests them(Compiz's configuration screen, Add/Remove program, etc)(and I realize this will probably be mainly (K)Ubuntu here ;) ). The only stipulation is it has to be from Hardy Heron/CentOS 5 since I'm trying to write for what I hope will be the current version or a version behind when I get it done. Most of the good Linux books are about two to three years behind now, so I'm seeking to update the information with some newer information, such as how to configure wireless or get Compiz to play nice with ATI cards.

Any help, however small, would be immensely helpful in helping me get this book out as quickly as possible.

I really like that. I was looking for more documentation kind of pictures, but that's great since I'd love to have a couple of pictures of different customizations people have done.

What is that app/widget on the right? I'm not familiar with it.

I'm running Hardy. What specific tasks would you like to see being completed?

I don't think it makes a lot of sense to have screenshots from different systems within the same tutorial, since the varying themes might make it confusing. Using one of the Human themes would make sense to me so that the icons match what the user will see.

I've attached a tarball showing the Disk Usage Analyzer. Since the analyzer shows that nearly 800MB are in use by /var/cache/apt/archives/, I included screenshots showing how to clear the archives to free up space. You might want to include an explanation that those .debs are like Setup.exes, so you don't really need to keep them around, and if you want to get rid of them do such and such..
