Hey,

I haven't been on the Ubuntu Forums for very long but, since forever, I've been trying to make my own Linux distro. I've posted in a couple of other programming forums but, everyone just recommends me to Linux From Scratch. Trust me, I've tryed that, for some reason, it just dosen't work. I know C/C++, and, I'm learning ASM and, I was wondering if anyone on Ubuntu Forums would be interested in helping me to make DarkLinux. A Linux distro that would start off as with a Command Line Interface but, would evolve into an awesome GUI system that would of course be free, and would be compatible with applications that run on many other operating systems.

So what do you think?? Care to join me in my quest for the perfect Linux?? If you are E-Mail me at jax375@hotmail.com.

Hey,

I'm thinking of starting a new Linux OS project. Code-named DarkLinux.
DarkLinux will be a system that will probably be based on Debian or Ubuntu and chances are it will use APT as a package manager.

So... If anyone wants to join in on the project e-mail me at jax375@hotmail.com but, if you don't want to join but suggest something post it here. Eventually I will create a website for the project and people will be able to get more detailed info about DarkLinux. If the project expands as much as I hope I will even add a forum to the site.

Is there going to be anything special about it? Or is it only about duplicating Debian or Ubuntu?

Yeah, more details will be needed to interest anyone.

I like darker themes - will that be all that's different?

I suggest putting in alot of dark based themes gtk and emerald themes.

Also some dare icon themes.

And some classy dark wallpapers.

Some suggestions:

The kore suite:

A nice emerald theme that goes with everything:

Thanks!! DarkLinux :
1. Will not just be about duplicating Debian or Ubuntu
2. Will have somewhat of a dark theme (like the ones suggested earlier)
3. Will be lightweight so it can basically run on anything made in the past fifteen years but, at installation you can choose weather you want a "Way-Cool system", "Normal System" or a "CLI only system"
4. Will support any package manager. In other words, if an Internet connection is available at installation you can choose to download a different manager and it will be installed with no hassle. If an internet connection in non present then a default will be installed (Probably APT)
5. Will be fully compatible with KDE, GNOME, XFCE, etc... At installation you can also choose which window manager will be installed. Otherwise the default (GNOME) will be installed.

Eventually, if enough people join in, I will open a DarkLinux website and forum available to all.

Hey,

Sorry for not giving you guys an update as to the DarkLinux Project!!
Currently I need more people to help with the forum and more developers. In other words, on the board I will open a forum called recruitment section. Post your developer signup there. I will review your skills and consider, for now, recuiting... ANYONE!! So if you are interested in administering the baord or developing the system give me a reply here or check out the recuitment foum on the board.

By the way here are some links to the board :
http://novasoft.t28.net/
http://darklinux.t28.net/

I accidentally made two and until I have more time I will not delete any.

thanks, Jax

Would you be kind enough to let us know what your DarkLinux project intends to do? You have this thread w/ links to 2 empty forums w/ nada information about your project. =]

I would love to help. I have built a Linux From Scratch system, but I could never get wireless to work so I reincorporated the LFS partition back into my Ubuntu one.

if you want to make it lightwieght you could include fluxbox too along with gnome, etc.

i suggest Building a highly functional desktop with lightweight software (also read the user comments very helpful suggestions to making it even more usuable):

Using 2 differet package manager will be fun. Not only will the system have to be able to handle both rpm and deb, they will be very hard to read and keep track of. Not to mention that integrating urpmi onto a debian system may step on some toes.

Only the package manager idea is different, and it's... misguided. So it looks like you should just take a lightweight distro that uses your favorite package manager, and create a DarkLinux theme for it.

I've seen a few people who thought they would just slap together a new Linux distro, and none of them had any concept of what a distro is or how to make and maintain one. Here's one clue: if you can't make Linux From Scratch work, then you don't have a prayer. You should know that backwards and forwards or you'd be unqualified to pick your packages and incapable of maintaining them.

WARNING: This will never get past the website and forum stage.

In an effort to be constructive, you should look at participating in a distro. Build from source, test, submit patches. Nobody embarks on a project like yours without some real experience.

Tap tap. If it does I will eat some words about this working.

Edit, why don't you just do a minial install and call it your OS, your friends wont know the difference.
