Hi there,

I currently have an Anhosting account and I hate them. I would like to change, but I don't know if ANY shared host is really going to be any better,

I need a host that lets me have multiple domains per account, with good uptime and security, something that lets me just upload my site and not have to worry about it too much, I need 24x7x365 customer support, preferably by chat and/or phone.

I'm trying to decide between IXwebhosting, Hostgator, and Bluehost. Any success or horror stories, or a better recommendation?

Thanks!

OK, I think I'm going to eliminate IXwebhosting from this race, I've found too many bad reviews. So it's Bluehost vs. HostGator.

Okay i recommend hostgator 100%. i use it for my website (http://eblognuts.org) and it works great. i only pay about 12 bucks a month and its good for the price and the bandwith. Me and nathangrubb another ubuntu user is using it as we speak if you need more information about hostgator i can give you some info

Thanks for the replies. I am leaning toward HostGator, but I'm sure there are some downsides to it also...

Me too ;)

I am in a similar position, and am leaning towards hostgator too.

I had an online chat with their support about potential issues with installing Dokeos (that I use), and they did some research and got straight back to me.

I was impressed enough. Glad to hear more people have good experiences too before I wade in.

PS: I also had a pretty good experience with wirenine

I used Bluehost for two years. I had nothing but problems with them. Lousy service and technical support.

Read about my nightmare with Bluehost. (http://inetintegrity.com/weblog/?p=1)

So I'm seeing that in general, the major problem with shared hosts is the CPU limit and downtime. So are there any reliable shared hosts who don't cut you short on CPU time? Any comments on http://downtownhost.coml or http://a2hosting.com ?

Hmmm Servage looks like it's a pretty good deal. However I don't like the fact that they have no phone or chat instant support.

Oooh, I just read now that Servage uses server clusters! That IS nice. Any other Servage opinions?

I've never had any problem with hostgator. And for me that's something.

There are many hosting companies providing good services e.g StartLogic, Dreamhost, Laughing Squid, IX Web Hosting, AN Hosting, HostICan, Bluehost and many others. So i think you should read reviews about selected host and if possible, go for a trial for couple of selected hosts and analyze the results as per your requirements.

I've been using LiquidWeb (http://www.liquidweb.com/) for about a year and have been happy with them.

I've been using JustHost since they were cheap for "unlimited."

I recommend not buying a domain from them tho, their DNS management tools suck big time. I'm using domain.com for my domain management.

Alot of the hosts listed are over sellers (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=117303.0). I personally use MonteCarloHosting (http://montecarlohosting.net/client/aff.php?aff=019) and it works great. Note that link is tagged with my referral, im not sure if I get anything with it, but its the link I saw.

+1 for HostGator. A tech support rep once spent an hour with me on the phone to fix a botched WordPress install. He was patient, polite, and solved my problem. Now that's customer service. That was for a client project.

Currently use HawkHost for my personal projects. So far, no complaints.

Ignore those "Top 10 web hosting" review websites. Almost all of them are spam. Go with WebHostingTalk.com to get the real lowdown on good and bad hosts.

By the way, I like using NameCheap for domains. The control panel is very user-friendly. Best to keep your domains and web hosting with separate companies.

Be cautious when web hosts offer "free lifetime domains." They might try to hold you hostage by refusing to transfer your domain if you want to change to another web host.

Good luck!

I cannot agree more. Always keep domain registration and hosting with different companies.
