Pittsburgh Area,
I wondering if their is going to be a Hardy Heron install party. I was looking on the forums and noticed their was a Gutsy Release Party that I missed out on. I would like to attend a Hardy Heron Release Party if their is one going to be held in the Pittsburgh area. if anyone knows of anything please post here. I'm sure I'm not the only one who missed out on the last Release part which I believe was held at "The Fox and the Hound" near the Northway mall. If anyone has any idea, help out the community here in Pittsburgh.
thanks

How about friday april 25th at the same place!?!? Or do people have an easier time getting to somewhere closer to town like station square? Maybe that would be the most fair to everybody but then you would be yelling over the super-loud music at all the bars there. Nothing like booze and linux! HAHA

Wow, someone actually posted back. I thought I made the thread for nothing. I was hoping for some kind of response from many users, but thanks dark_harmonics for some kind of response. I'm all for meeting at the same place, I just hope more people decide to come. any who, I hope more people respond to the thread so maybe we can plan something for April 25.

Well i personally know 7 users of ubuntu. Now whether they are willing to geek it out with me at a release party is another story! LOL! I can definitely be there and probably my girlfriend. The good thing about that place on a Friday night is that they have awesome tables, wide drink selection, good food and lots of attractive patrons :P
I would say if we get at least 4 or 5 peeps from here to go, that would be a cool release party. I have my UBUNTU shirt HAHAH!
Edit: I also sent an email to the mailing list! Hopefully that can help pick up some attention :)

If this thing goes down, you can count me in. Fox and the Hound is like literally 5 minutes from my folks place. Nice bar also.

I'm definately going to be there. I love the bar, and so if im the only dork there wearing my Ubuntu T-shirt drinking and playing pool in celebration of this release, then i am fine with that. I hope that more folks could show up though. It would be nice to meet the folks in our area who support this awesome OS.
I personally know a few people who use it, (like my brother, 3 work people, and 2 friends) but i dont know who all will be able to go that day. I did start an email about it, but it turned into a philly release email :(

I need a PDF of the Hardy Heron flyer so that we dont have to be annoyed at answering the question about what it is. I'll just bring a few to hand out. Or maybe just hand them out to ppl.

Is the party on the release day (dumb question)?
Anyways, I'd be down to go if I was still gonna be in town :D

I wish there was a solid user group for just our area. It would be nice to actually get one together. I wouldn't mind putting in a few hours to organize things, but my diplomacy skills are pretty /dev/null. I know there are more ubuntu users out there in pittsburgh land...

Oh i am so sorry ppls! I sent out an email to the group figuring it would reach all interested parties. I was thinking about the friday of the release we would meet at fox and the hound north of pittsburgh (just up mcknight road. There is good beer (wide selection) awesome tables, and good (resteraunt quality at least) food. So the date i propose is april 25th at around 7:00pm. How does this sound to the people in here? In the email i had a google maps link for everybody but looking up "Fox and the Hound" should pull it up.
tomorrow i will post the entire email from the other computer (dont have it handy).

Greetings friends and fellow community members!
It's that time again to start working up some hype for the next release of Ubuntu! If you are like me, and love this OS to the point of being crazy, lets meet to get drunk (or not) and shoot the **** at "Fox and the Hound" north of Pittsburgh.
Here is a Google-maps of the location I'm talking about here.

I have to say that i am excited to meet everybody! I am a recent convert (i was just using a virtual machine for the first few months with it to do linux based tasks at work), but i LOVE my converted desktop so much more. It really brought new life into my old systems and the dual-head cubes are just fantastic!
Does anybody think i should bring some ubuntu flyers to hand out? I can run some off @ work today or next week in preparation.

April 11th, 2008, 08:27 PM
It actually like 15 minutes from the center of town (quicker if you are already on 279 north), but if you would rather meet somewhere in town just name the place. As long as others are flexible I am. It's just an easy to get to place that has lots of benifits. An alternate location is not out of the picture for me, but you guys just need to get a definitive on that. Otherwise i will be at the fox as planned. I took the responsibility to be there after sending that mail, but i can send an update if we pick a new place. I'd rather not be around super loud music or a bunch of teenagers with fake IDs if possbile (station square lol).

I always say anywhere is cool. Fox and Hound is not that far away from Pittsburgh proper. It's actually a quick 5 minute shot from Pittsburgh. Low traffic (read "No tunnels").
Either way, somebody aught to see about reserving a spot for say 10-15 peeps wherever we decide to meet.

From the sounds of it, more than that is going to show up. I got it marked on the calendar. Im going to be the guy there with a ubuntu shirt on with my username on the back of it.

Now THAT is GEEKY HAHA. I'll be there at the planned time and place. I dont know who the official "organizer" is but I just wanted to make sure we had a definite time/place Waay ahead of time for this release. I'm gonna be at Fox with my girlfriend and brother wearing our ubuntu shirts. Maybe next time somebody who is actually good at organizing and who maybe has the time (i do school and work and dont have much), could make a more "official" party.
If everybody agrees to it (i'll take more than 3 posts as agreement) I wil call Fox and arrange to have a few tables reserved for us. Anybody here like to play pool? this place has a wonderful pool table setup.
I am really going so that i can hear from all of you. The most important thing is that I be able to understand what everybody is talking about and not have to scream my voice out. When i go drinking with my friends it doesnt matter, but then we arent talking about deep subjects like Linux.
Does anybody think i should bring stuff like flyers and maybe a crap-top with hardy beta loaded?

I think the Fox and the Hound is a great place to host us. It's huge! and easy to get to. Flyers could be a good idea just so we don't have to try to explain what it is and who we are when we're a couple beers deep and on our 10th explanation! My buddy and I will see you folks there right around 7.

Hi everyone,
While I can't make the release party on the 25th, I would be interested to know if you guys have any discussions about a local user group, etc. I know of a lot of people (especially where I work) that would be interested. Also, there is the WPLUG (http://www.wplug.org) organization that is pretty active (I think) in the Western PA area and is based somewhere around CMU.

I have heard of the wlug. They are actually on the cmu campus. I havn't had time since getting back to the city 3 years ago to check them out. there website is http://www.wplug.org/. Check it out. They cover all kinds of topics including how to install debian based distros on sparcs. (my favorite) as well as other things.

ATTENTION: We will be going early to secure seating. There is a pens playoff game that night, and so they are busy there. I will be there right around 6:00pm if anybody wants to help us make sure there are enough places to sit. Apparently TONS of people agree with my high opinion of the bar. The official time/place hasn't changed but earlier is better :). I am estimating around 10+ attendees from here and from my personal contacts. If we end up being a small enough group, I will pay for a pool table for use to play/chat/gather around. If we end up being larger, I am hopeful that enough of us show up early to secure seating or that Fox will want to accommodate us. This is an extremely hard thing to estimate because I've never arranged for it before.

The release party at the Fox and Hound sounds fantastic! It is great that there is a users group (WPLUG) in Pgh, but the city is big enough for more than one.
I should think priorities would evolve around:
1. Finding a permanent place to meet.
2. Electing people to be in charge of certain function; e.g. starting the meeting, taking minutes, welcoming people, doing a sign-up sheet, getting snacks , delegating who is best at what (such as showing newbies how to Linux).
3. Perhaps partitioning off areas for demos ranging from the above mentioned newbie’s to advanced command line users and perhaps a common demo for all (at the beginning of the meeting).
These are a few ideas left over from an old users group (going all the way back to commodore) and I hope are still of some use.

April 24th, 2008, 02:58 AM
By the way, we have no reservations at the Fox and Hound. Also, we might consider either another location or another time as this Friday is the next Pens game.
Although I DO enjoy watching them play, I can tell you from past experience that the Fox and Hound will be absolutely PACKED.

Tim,
I did mention that i was unable to pull reservations above. Who expected the pens to make it so far? For those of us who get upset by the crowds i would suggest that we could always move the party to another location. Maybe you guys could discuss? I picked fox because it is a very social kind of place that is easy to get to. I would not have made the same choice knowing that the pens would be playing, but its a little late now to change. Its better to keep the same time/place, and then i will leave work a little early to make sure we can secure some seats.
TimBosse
April 25th, 2008, 08:35 PM
Well, I was expecting the Pens to go THIS far at least, but I was expecting the first game to be yesterday for some odd reason.
Apparently you cannot get reservations on Friday or Saturday at the Fox and Hound. I did contact their event coordinator, and we can get some good seats in the future...
I will try to be there early, I work a little later than most and won't get out there till around 6PM or later depending.
I will be in the Roberts 10 Jersey, carrying a Dell Latitude D620 around. I have slightly red hair, heavyset (only slightly, I swear :) and wear glasses.

I think thats a great idea. What we really need is our own local group. Somewhere in the middle where we can consistently meet would be nice too. Maybe somewhere not too far off the the center of Pittsburgh. I want people to feel like no matter what part of PGH they live in, that they are welcome to check out our group (and for free unlike the wplug already here).

Nightwishfan: College is important only to get that piece of paper. Also, it can help you grow as an individual. Really there probably wont be alot of "computer" learning that can be taught to somebody who obviously knows what they're doing (looking at your thanks). I thought the party was a great success and hope you guys get a substantial group in the Pittsburgh area. As I mentioned, though there is a group (WPLUG?), I am not a fan of charging people to share info. Also, with all due respect for the other fine distros of Linux, there is no law against an exclusively Ubuntu group.
I would make sure all understand it is to share info, not hit on girls and not to be a podium for politics, spirituality etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.

Hello westerners,
Our old 'Official Disk' contact has relocated to another part of the state.
We are in need of a Pittsburgh area and Erie area contact to send your allotment of disks.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PennsylvaniaTeam/Disks
The candidates should have involvement with LUGs and/or general user groups so that there is a basic network to distribute the cd's already in place.
Any interested candidates should email me at : jedijf at yahoo dot com.
Please include any affiliations you have and a mailing address. If many are received we will vote at an irc meeting for each area's representative.
Let's get these disks out to the public !!
