Hi, I'm wanting to upgrade my motherboard and processor, I'm wanting to o with an AMD processor, because they seem to be so much better value than intel. The only problem is that i have no idea which to choose, I definately want dual or quad core, something that can be overclocked, and runs pretty cool (everything that most people want tbh)

so anyway, can some people suggest the best processor for me, I'm looking to spend about £200 in total, ideally £150 on the CPU, and £50 on the motherboard ($300 & £100)

cheers

In all seriousness, forget AMD. Yes, GHz/price AMD may come out better, but preformancewise, Intel C2D, or even budget quads wipe the floor when compared to AMD.

I'm a recent convert. Up until 3 months ago i was a long time AMD fanboi. Just don't bother with AMD unless you have morals (competitive market BS)

one of the best processors for OC'ing, if you know what your doing you can easily get 4GHz :)

Since your in the UK I am not sure how helpful this will be interms of actually ordering but anyway.
For Intel assuning you want a quad.
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017) 128.37 GBP

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128059) for 45.30 GBP
Hard to go wrong with that combo.
As far as AMD goes right now the quad core Phenom is not that great we'll see what the B3 rev. brings. Now if you do want to stick with AMD and there is nothing wrong with that as I am an admitted fanboy, it's hard to go wrong with a X2 5000+ BE and a M2N32-SLi. Another alternative would be the Opteron 1210 or 1212 (F3 revision if you can get it) both are extrordinary overclockers and the larger L2 gives them an advantage in certain applications despite what some people believe.

*The E6850 that xhhux linked is also a great choice as well as the E6600 GO stepping.
