You went overboard with the processor and maybe even the RAM, and totally skimped on storage space. A quad core processor is pretty much a waste of money for a desktop user at this point in time. It's easier to get a quad-capable motherboard and a decent dual-core processor.

i have a budget of $2000 (my dad said so) and i was just going to squeeze every penny possible out of it :-)

Don't do SLI, unless you're powering huge arrays of monitors it's generally not worth the extra $200+.

If you have extra money to spend you'd be better off getting another monitor.

220gb hdd (160 + 60)
dvd burner *top*
dvd reader *bottom*
e-GeForce 7600 GTX
Creative X-FI

Haha, don't expect this to sound impressive on a linux forum where a large percentage of users are teenage geeks.

Firstly, spoiled much? Secondly, even with a $2000 budget, you still made crappy choices. Why spend money on something that isn't going to benefit you in the immediate future? Like I said, you skimped on storage space. 160GB? You could've easily scored 1 TB and still had enough money for a fast dual-core processor. You didn't "squeeze every penny possible" out of your money, but ended up doing quite the opposite.

if you put more than 1500 into a com, its a must have. i think its a law or something.:)

but seriously, its mind-blowing! ! !

EDIT: heres a sample of the power, when you first start it, its in windowed mode because they don't want it to crash your com. :)

My self-built computer are:

AMD A64 4400+ (I did some oc so it runs @ 2.8ghz)
Asus A8N-Sli deluxe mobo
1 gb ddr-ram as this is 939 cpu/mobo
Lots of space, about 1.4 tb
All-in-one dvd-burner/reader/etc
Geforce 6800gs card

I was considering an upgrade a few months ago, but I don't need it. I don't play any games, and Ubuntu flies with this.

That dual core will outperform a quad core if you rub it on the carpet before installing it.

maniacmusician
February 28th, 2008, 02:09 AM
So dual core is better?
spending money on quad core processors right now as a desktop user is somewhat pointless, since most desktops aren't optimized to utilize them. By the time that they do utilize them properly, there will be faster, desktop-oriented quad-cores out for purchase, and you'll be wishing you had one of those. So yes, dual core processors are more economical right now, and it's definitely not worth the price difference compared to the minimal performance you gain. Things like RAM and storage space are much more important as far as daily usage goes.

Oh and to OP: Get the 8800GT. Much better value for money.

The GTX is a scam.

9-series are not out yet, except for the 9600, and that is mid-range.
