There is a BIG problem with the lack of female developers in the software world - results in the application software etc being tailored to male users, so i was wondering:

How many ubuntu forum users are female?

(a poll would be good for this i think)

Not that I have a problem with more ladies writing code and stuff... but how is application software being tailored to males in the first place?

Because most programmers are male, it is inevitable that their POV is the dominant one - doesn't have to be conscious - the male brain is different than the female

Well, there are the women's forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=76)

And also a popular HOWTO paper (http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Encourage-Women-Linux-HOWTO/x28.html) written by a woman in the linux community, on this subject.

I'm not sure if it's necessary to have a poll about this, but I'm kind of wondering too.

thanks for the links, as for the poll, i thought it would be a good way to represent the problem graphically to the male dominated forums - not much use tucking it away in ubuntu women perhaps...

"I am neither mail nor female" has 3 votes at this point in time...

The results will be very highly esteemed.

Why do people always find it necessary to include 'the joke option' in polls? It only serves to skew the results.

I'm wondering about this myself. What exactly would be the difference between a file manager written for women and a file manager written for men?

1. Its NOT a joke option:

http://www.christianmentalhealth.com/doc/pps/genderidentity.pps

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_identity_disorder

that is the organs say male, but the brain says female

2. Are you really wondering?
if so, i'll post you a slew of academic papers you can refer to.

Why? Because it catches false votes. I always have an "other" type option to prevent people from messing with the actually options.

Now, why people vote for it on this particular poll:
