Awesome desktop. I've got a few questions:

Are there any Linux ports/alternatives to the applications in the screenshot? I'd like to make Firefox (or any other browser) to look like Safari in the screenshot. I'd also like to know if there are any mplayer/etc frontends similar to the media player in the shot. The music player interests me as well.

I see that the these is basically Mirev2, but I don't think it's possible to get the panel to appear that way. How about the file manager? Can I make nautilus that compact; removing the menu-bar (or even having a hotkey to toggle it on/off?).

That really is a nice shot. For the web browser, konqueror can do that look with the up, back, and forward buttons in text. So can firefox if you only have a back and forward button and have it set to text.

Media players, no idea but I really like the music one.

FM, nautilus can't though konqueror can. Thunar can come close with a bit of tweaking.

Really, for a mac like desktop, KDE will get you.

I've got Firefox and Nautilus pretty compact, but I can't get rid of the menu bars. I'd switch to KDE if I knew I could get this effect.

If you have the HDD space, go for it. In konqueror, ctrl+m hides the menubar so you can get it exactly like that shot. I like kde because it feels "complete" but a bit too bubbly for my taste. I'll do some reading around about compiling or hacking away the menubar in nautilus.

Konqueror is pretty cool, but it keeps saying "Open with..." for every thread/forum I click on in UF. Weird.

Probably can set a default for that, so it doesn't ask, in the settings. I don't have konqueror on this computer.

Sounds like a php association issue for konqueror.
If you made some custom icons with just text you could probably use awn (http://wiki.awn-project.org/) for the reflective panel at the bottom of the screenshot.
You might be able to find a nice skin for VLC media player here (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/skins.php) as that application uses a separate window for the video as the media player in the screenshot does.
Gnome-Look is the place to find themes for your window decorations and the upper panel.
Im not sure but nautilus might look more compact in spatial mode which is quite funny really.
