View Full Version : Another Huge Failure about to happen

"There will be a Service Pack 3 for Windows XP," Bernard Ourghanlian, technical and security director at Microsoft France, confirmed, revealing that Microsoft's OS is set for another major update.
My questions about this are such.....

1. What programs will not be supported on this service pack?

2. What registry keys will be turned on or off be default?

3. What additional components will be added and turned on by default?

4. Will they attempt to address the piracy issue again in this SP?

5. Will it make a cup of coffee for me?

1: Too many.

2: See 1.

3: See 2.

4: Yes, and will again fail miserably with a hack posted on /. even before its release

5: Yes, SP3 will happily provide you with a cup of Microsoft Coffee. Just deposit an initial $69.99 service fee for the dispenser rental and support charges. Cup rentals are also provided at an additional $24.99 each. Be sure to install Microsoft Coffee Service Pack 1 when you recieve your dispenser however, as it adds a patch to cover the hole exploited by the "E.Bol@" virus discovered five months ago and patched last week.

Seriously though, it seems (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=22947) that SP3 will be an update only in the sense that Windows 2000 Update Rollup 1 was. All the bugfixes jammed into one huge download. Wether or not MS will see fit to include the .NET framework this time is another story...

The trouble with Micro$oft Virtual Coffee Version 2, is that it just doesn't smell right!

That's all right, for an additional $299.99, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer will urinate in your Microsoft Coffee, providing a taste of that authentic Microsoft experience you've come to know and love.

Ahh Friday! I can just imagine the video with monkey boy going one step further than a sweaty shirt and a thrown office chair.

I doubt it's possible considering they have massively used services like msn search and hotmail. It's just a guess but I would think they deal with more traffic per day that slashdot could ever direct.

Eww, thats just disgusting, after reading Ubunted's comment I'm very glad I perfer tea.

Couldn't you just have said Microsoft Coffee(TM) will be full of viruses, the Visual Cup(TM) framework will be full of security holes and the Cup Holder(TM) feature will be unstable?

Sure, he could have done that, but then I would not have burst into loud laughter when I read his post. Too quiet around this office today, thanks gusy.

As to staying on topic, I'm excited about this, after SP2 and the work it took I see this as one more opportunity to discuss OSS solutions and Linux at work.

How is this another huge failure about to happen? As far as I'm concerned, the more the Service Packs the more upgraded and less dangerous an Operating System is. I'm sure we have all had our issues with Microsoft Windows' ones, but I can't say I didn't like its Service Pack 2 at all. Or is it a joke my sometimes boring nature avoids me from understanding ?

They had a beta of SP3 leaked onto torrentspy I think

Maybe, but Shaw won't ding you for going 11GB on a 10GB month. In fact you could do 100 and they wouldn't say much.

I personally had no issues when I upgraded to SP2. From what I can gather, SP3 is mainly going to add some features that are going to be native to Win Vista (formerly known as longhorn) to the Win XP desktop like the graphics engine Avalon.

Don't forget all the "upgraded" media stuff that will include the latest DRM, not cool.

As far as SP2 goes, I have had no personal issues with it but the company I consult at right now has an in-house app (very old program) that gets utterly destroyed by SP2. They are working on a re-write but I mentioned SP3 in a meeting the other day and the devs looked like they were gonna' vomit. Luckily they are receptive to OSS solutions and I am making some headway moving some functions from Win to Linux, time will tell.
