On the bbc, there's an article here:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7257411.stm

It states that "The technology giant is to publish key software blueprints on its website.

It also promised not to sue open source developers for making that software available for non-commercial use."
Is this DX10, WMP, and Office? If it is DX9 or 10, cadega is screwed, but we'll have gaming at last!
Comments?

BTW MS is undermining 3rd party security apps!:lolflag: (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7205059.stm)

I don't believe it! Micro$oft and open source? Though I can't imagine they'll let Linux have DX10.

they ARE being investigated/fined by the EU (European Union) I'm perfectly happy getting DX9 out of the deal!

First of all, this is all about trying to get OOXML pushed as a standard so they aren't forced to implement ODF.

This is about their Office formats. Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc... and it isn't open source. They are simply releasing specifications on the formats and I've read through them already. The are convoluted and obfuscated.

Also, they have made NO PROMISE not to sue. They reserve all rights to their "intellectual property" and if they wish, they can take you to court any time they want.

Don't be fooled by this farce. It's simply their way of trying to appease the EU while trying to push their OOXML specification which they themselves have absolutely no intention of implementing.

Their licenses are non-compliant with the GPL and limit your options.

Microsoft have been undermining themselves and their partners for the last twenty years, nothing new under the hood :)

Even a release of dx8 would benefit wine immensely, but I don't see it happening any time soon, if ever. I think the article is about their server and network stuff, with 'interoperability' in the context of communications.
It's a vague term , as is the 'promise not to sue'.. what does that mean exactly ? They won't sue, but they reserve the right to ? So the technology they're "offering" is de facto used illegally ? I think it's a device, to have a foothold when open source becomes relevant enough to be actually dangerous.
It is common sence that if they wanted to release something, there are licenses and ways to restrict how it will be used, without "promises".

No matter how this goes, there may be a decline in the use of directx soon, unless they release DX10 for windows XP.
It's still a very good OS for gaming, with better performance in most cases. I just can't see vista outperforming XP any time soon, and that's going to have an impact.

you're not really that naive are you? its surely some half-hearted ploy to be executed in a half-assed manner.

Keep that DX junk away from Linux. Give me OGL3.0 and I'm happy.

Along these same lines, isn't Microsoft collaborating with Novell and openSUSE? I know Novell is currently working to get a legal hold on the Open Source movement and Microsoft is working with them. I read this somewhere and this is literally the extent of my knowledge about it. It's probably just pure paranoia but has anyone else heard anything along these lines? It all has to do with Microsoft's claim to be working on interoperability with Linux (which Linus is pretty unmoved and wary about.)

Please don't get your tech news from the BBC, if you had bothered to read any of the articles from actual tech news outlets you would have discovered that this has more to do with the networking issues caused by the incompatible filesystems that exist between NTFS and all of the filesystems that the linux kernel (and others) support. In other words the only projects that will benefit from this will be SAMBA, the various office suites, and the various SQL databases. Even then it will take quite a long time to sort through the specs to fix the errors that reverse engineering can cause.

Microsoft will be releasing 30,000 pages of API and protocol documentation for Windows, Office, Exchange Server, SharePoint and SQL Server.
