I just noticed the presence of FreeSerif, FreeSans, and FreeMono on my system. I tried typing some stuff with them, and I realized that FreeSans looks almost exactly liek Helvetica, right down to dropping the tail on the a in bold! Not only that, FreeSerif is nearly indistinguishable from Times New Roman!
This got me wondering, who made these fonts, and what is their "story," so to speak?

shoot an email to bubulle@debian.org or markos@debian.org they are the maintainers for the package. I'm sure they will tell you more about it.
