View Full Version : How big of a computer geek are you?

This is just for fun!!! You are not permitted to take offense. I thought it was amusing.

Go take the test, then register in the poll. http://www.nerdtests.com/ft_cg.php

I'm a Low-Rank Computer Geek with a score of 65.

EDIT: I took it a second time and scored an 80. Reality is "somewhere in there" between 65 and 80.
EDIT2: This was totally without using Google...using it isn't exactly cheathing, but it does diminsh the accuracy of your true geekiness measure.

EDIT3: It's nearly a year later. I took it again and scored a 91.

OMG. I just scared the crap out of myself.

I must go and do something... non-geeky. really. not all fun things revolve around my badass desktop box... after all other fun things revolve around my ibook.

I have cats! Real Cats.

One of my favorite questions that I hand out to students on their intro to CS quiz is: "When will this end?" (it's an infinite loop.)

The one answer that made me nearly pee myself laughing: "It's an infinite loop, so it will take about a half an hour on a Cray."

Overall, you scored as follows:
36% scored higher (more computer geeky),
1% scored the same, and
63% scored lower (less geeky).
Compared to those in the same age group as you:
48% scored higher (more computer geeky),
1% scored the same, and

You are not stupid. Just because you do not know all the lingo and do not program does not make you less proficient at using a computer. That is the beauty of being a geek is that one can become one when she wishes to learn how.

96. Yeah!

I cheated a little. Like, I didn't actually recognize Seymour Cray, but I knew he wasn't any of the other options. And I didn't hand-reverse the rot13 string; I found a web site to do it. But I figured that was OK since I've written rot13 routines before.

darkmatter

I cheated a little.

Heh. I counter-cheated. Couldn't help it. Some of the alternative answers were just to funny to NOT choose. I probably would have scored higher if I took it seriously.;)

That's the problem with any online quiz. They are meant to be fun, but they can't compensate for individual personalities.

I like answers that make me laugh.:)

I got a 44

Not as into computers as I used to be. I remember 6 years ago I spent my whole day writing HTML and JavaScript (that was before everyone started using all the extra stuff like Photoshop, Flash, and PHP). In 1998 I wrote a whole suite of DOS batch files including one that could hide and unhide files (and I don't mean just setting the +h attribute!). I guess now school is more important so I haven't had time to fiddle around. Yet I do make sure every one of my computers dual-boots (except for a PIII I have that is exclusively Debian sarge). Plus I'm more interested in humanities and social sciences than computers now.

I would like to know how that test is scored and how many you need to get "right" in order to get 100.

I did cheat on some stuff. I did not know what ROT13 was....but was too curious to let that one get by - and then found a ROT13 converter online.

The ASCII stuff - well, I don't have an ASCII chart inside my head, who does? But I did write a program just a few months ago to convert ASCII to Hex and back again.

BASIC, PHP, Pascal, C, Java, HTML, DOS batch, Shell Scripts.....yes, been there and done that.

I said the first programmable computer was used to crack codes in WWII but someone on another web site said it was used to compute projectile paths.

It was an interesting test, that much is certain :)

55% scored lower (less geeky).

Compared to those in the same age group as you:

59% scored higher (more computer geeky),
1% scored the same, and
40% scored lower (less geeky).

55 was my score.

86.

Only used google for one thing: What the quiz asked me to use google for.

Pretty neat test :)

I would have added different questions to mine... I may not have an overwhelming amount of programming knowhow, but I migrated an entire organizations Exchange 5.5 information store in a Novell 4.11 Domain to an exchange 2003 Active Directory 2003 domain on a laptop VPN'ed in from home while raiding AQ20 in WoW on my main PC. That should be worth a few points...

funny quiz, insulting at some parts though. what would one's love life have to do with his knowledge about computers for example?
got a 51 by the way

Age old stereotype that nerds can't get girlfriends/boyfriends. Maybe in the 50's :P

hehe it reminded me of the phrase (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_S._Miller#cite_note-1) of Cantrill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryan_Cantrill) to Miller (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_S._Miller) , by far the funniest thing about computers.

strangely enough, probably because technology used to take decades to reach Greece, there are no synonyms of geek or nerd in greece, not in a bad way at least

Before I read the thread I voted myself as "Mid-Rank."

Then I saw there was a test involved. Oops!
http://www.nerdtests.com/images/ft/cg.php?val=2796

In my defense, I believe the fact that I just jumped right in before reading the documentation is sorta geeky. Or dumb.

LOL, same thing happened here :D

I ranked myself as mid-rank too:

I did cheat on some stuff. I did not know what ROT13 was....but was too curious to let that one get by - and then found a ROT13 converter online.

I knew what it was, but I didn't feel like translating it directly so I just did it like a normal cipher. Saved time, and I think I deserved bonus points. :P
