A series of linked in accronyms that just makes me laught how it links through 4 different one before you find the true breakdown of the first one:

GIMP > > > GNOME Image Manipulation Program
GNOME > > > GNU Network Object Model Environment
GNU > > > GNU's Not Unix
UNIX > > > Uniplexed Information and Computing System

Anyone know any others similar?

GIMP is really Graphics Image Manipulation Program, Gnome didn't exist until after Gimp since it was born out of the gtk (gimp tool kit) which then became the gnome tool kit. All very confusing.

True, except that GIMP is actually "GNU Image Manipulation Program". It originally used the Motif toolkit for its GUI, which was under a non-free license. So the developers started work on their own GUI toolkit, called GTK (Gimp ToolKit).

i thought it was GNU Image Manipulation Program (i know GNU is an abbreviation in itself, but apparantly it's supposed to be pronounced "gunoo", according to Richard Stallman)

So it should really be:
GNU's not Uniplexed Information and Computing System Image Manipulation Program.

GIMP is easier and funnier.

I tried to expand GIMP based on the original post, but struck an endless loop.

I think "GNU's Not UNIX" is the culprit.

Strictly speaking that one doesn't terminate because it ends at a recursive acronym a la WINE. *cough*

Yeah I suppose

Isn't WINE just a conjunction of WINdows Emulator?

Nope. Wine is not an emulator.

Nah, a Windows Emulator would simulate the entire Windows environment. Wine is a "translation layer". It reads the binary that was programmed for Windows and translates it for use in the native environment (Linux, BSD, etc).

There are no real Windows Emulators per se, except for virtual machines (which emulate computers rather than a single OS).

Gimp, a. [W. gwymp fair, neat, comely.]
Smart; spruce; trim; nice. [Obs. or Prov. Eng.]
[1913 Webster]

Gimp, n. [OF. guimpe, guimple, a nun's wimple, F. guimpe,
OHG. wimpal a veil G. wimpel pennon, pendant. See Wimple,
n.]
A narrow ornamental fabric of silk, woolen, or cotton, often with a metallic wire, or sometimes a coarse cord, running through it; -- used as trimming for dresses, furniture, etc.
[1913 Webster]

Gimp nail, an upholsterer's small nail.
[1913 Webster]

Gimp, v. t.
To notch; to indent; to jag.
[1913 Webster]

Now I'm REALLY confused! ?¿

So Essentialll GIMP should actually be called:

GNUNUUICSNOMEIMP:

GNU's Not Unix Uniplexed Information and Computing System Network Object Model Environment Image Manipulation Program

Not as catchy or pronounceable or as catchy (plus it makes my head hurt)

LOL:confused:

Is there a word for accronyms where the first letter stands for that accronym?

EG

LAME >>> Lame Aint Mp3 Encoder
GNU >>> Gnu Not Unix

Just wondered

Accurately:

GNU's Not Uniplexed Information and Computing System Image Manupulation Program ToolKit+ -> GTK+ (There was a version without the '+', but it didn't have signals).

GNU's Not Uniplexed Information and Computing System Object Model Environment -> GNOME.

GTK+'s name doesn't come into GNOME, and GNOME has nothing to do with GIMP's name.

Is there a word for accronyms where the first letter stands for that accronym?

Recursive acronym.

GIMP means GNU's Not Uniplexed Information and Computing System Network Object Model Environment Image Manipulation Program.

No it doesn't. It is not GNOME Image Manipulation Program, it's GNU Image Manipulation Program. If you don't believe me, see the actual source code (http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gimp/trunk/desktop/gimp.desktop.in.in?view=markup) or this bug (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gimp/+bug/189758).
