View Full Version : CD Distribution?

I own a DVD/CD duplication company. Am I allowed to sell, say 50 copies of Ubuntu Linux for $50 (+ shipping). I thought it would be a good way to distribute Ubuntu to companies or organizations that might want 50 discs or more at a time quickly. Thanks for feedback on licensing and permissions. Cheers!

my guess is that it would be illegal because of some GPL or so. but i dunno what the ubuntu owners view is on that point

I think anything under the GNU license can be sold if you want, but who in their right minds would spend 50$ for something they can get for free???

Is Ubuntu under the Gnu license?

Edit: Do do mean 50$ for 50 CD's or 50$ for 1 CD and you have 50 CD's?

You are totally free to distribute it, and you can charge people for the service of distribution you provide. You may run into some issues with trademarks, however, as Canonical own the TMs for the Ubuntu name and logos.

I mean 50 CDs for $50 + shipping. I have the equipment to burn 400 CDs per hour. I will do some more research and/or write the company.

I think it's aloud, you can sell anything open source as long as it comes with the same license that you got it with.
Usually it would include the source code too though. I am actually not sure what license Ubuntu uses.
But if it's covered under gnu then you can sell it.

From gnu (http://www.gnu.org/)

“Free software (http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html)” is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of “free” as in “free speech”, not as in “free beer”.

another important piece of info

..... 'Thus, you should be free to redistribute copies, either with or without modifications, either gratis or charging a fee for distribution, to anyone anywhere (http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html#exportcontrol). Being free to do these things means (among other things) that you do not have to ask or pay for permission.'

About the above, that also depends on which licensing ubuntu usues, which I have not looked into. If Gnu then the above applies and you can sell it.

Short answer; yes, Long answer; yes, but you may run into some trademark issues if you're not careful. But I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah as long as your not claiming it as your own and your just distributing it i dont think they would mind most likely get a pat on the back for helping spread the word.
As long as you use the money for the discs and not for profit then i dont tihnk anyone would have a problem with it.

If you click on System>About Ubuntu they talk about their licensing.

As long as you use the money for the discs and not for profit then i dont tihnk anyone would have a problem with it.You are aloud to make a profit. If under gnu, Ubuntu might have a different license in place. I do see Gnu in the help menu but haven't read everything else they might have in place.

It probably isn't easy to make a profit anway since everyone can get it for free.

Ok, thanks for the note. I have written Ubuntu regarding the use of the trademarks and permissions for copying.

I also registered the domain: http://www.bulklinux.com so that should be online some day soon I hope. Thanks for the advice.

ubee1

I took a few minutes and put the site up this afternoon. I will wait for permissions first, but then I will go ahead and start my comedy act: I was going to start with something like....

...an image of Linux user giving away his 50 discs to scantily clad females...something like that anyway...I am still working out my marketing strategies...heh heh...I think "I'll buy that for a dollar" is well used so it doesn't work for me right now...if you have any ideas, send 'em over...

ubee1

Ok, I am still working on my stand up...but there is a marketing strategy in there somewhere...or, maybe this is just pathetic...I don't know...

Firefox can't find the server at www.bulklinux.com.

* Check the address for typing errors such as

Sorry to disappoint about the web site...getting started on that...I just finished building two AMD 6000+ machines this afternoon with Ubuntu on them! Quite nice actually. Any way, I will work on the scantily clad women part soon enough! There's ALLLways time for the ladies...

will work on the scantily clad women part soon enough! There's ALLLways time for the ladies... Not everything needs to be sold with scantily-clad women! If you were really taking time for us, you'd take time to listen to us, not just stare at our *****. We don't like it when you men* go around acting like our ***** and rears are the only interesting parts of us!

The closest I'll get to using scantily-clad women to market Linux is something like this...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v472/macoafi/girls_computers_linux.png
Note that none of them are anywhere near scantily-clad, unless seeing Betty Jean Jennings' and Fran Bilas' calves counts.

* Not all men do this, of course, but you are. I don't like it, and I know quite a lot of other women don't like it either.

My sister and I were looking at the poster in your neatly assembled photograph entitled "LinuxChix Brasil" and we didn't like it one bit!
We looked up the definition of Chicks on this web site http://onlineslangdictionary.com/definition+of/chick and they agree that many women find the term "chick" offensive but apparently, biker "chicks" don't mind.
The world is full of misconceptions. I am just a stupid man with a mustachioed, Eastern Bloc, spoiled dormitory brat for a sister, but what do I know?

Maybe back when the "Eastern Bloc" still existed... but hi, welcome to the 21st Century! "Chick" is about as offensive to us as "guy" or "dude" would be to you. Of course, how you use it would still have an effect on that statement; anything can be offensive when used as a pejorative.

OK, sorry to step in here, but
this is not to be turned into a flame war.
I am sorry macogw if you got upset by it. I didn't post it, but I do think it was more as a joke.
Advertisers do use ladies and also men...so please don't take offense.
I respect woman the same as I respect men,
as equals.
So please no fighting. :)Now, that being said, let's spread the word about Ubuntu. :)

Pejorative? Are you an English major? Just wondering. I had to look that up and then come back. Dude is a very offensive word, actually.

I dare you to use it 5 times in one day!

Here's but one example:

Anyway, I think Alfalfa said it best: "I'm a lover not a fighter." That's where I stand.
