ed is a text editor, but it is a line-oriented text editor.
Looks like the syntax is similar to sed.

This made me curious. It would be interesting to try, at least just once. :-)

I glanced through the man page, it actually seems rather nice.

[~]$ ed
a
Hello world!
.
w foo.txt
13
q
[~]$ cat foo.txt
Hello world!

Now, if I only could find a use for it... :-k

For all the people bashing ed, there was a blind Linux programmer who said it was one of the most useful pieces of software that he had ever worked with because it told him information in a form that was ideal for a blind user. It is completely line oriented which is essentially the world blind users are stuck in.

To use it

ed myfile.txt
i
This is a line of text
and another line of text
I can keep typing until a line with a single period
.
1
i
This line is above line 1.
.
w
q

Now less myfile.txt and see how it looks.

I used the butterfly effect to write my IRC bot. Only noobs get within a mile of their hard drives to write code...

Never actually cared enough to use any of those special editors (vi, ed, etc.). Never had the patience.
