Ive been on newegg lately looking for a good reasonably mp3 player. i cannot seem to find one at the moment. i would need one that can be expanded with an sd card (such as this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211180 and i wanted to know some recommendations for some reasonably priced mp3 players that have built in memory and can be expanded as well. It can be an old one as well.

My ipod hard drive broke and im not even spending money for another 30gb one.

You should look into the Cowon D2. It's great and works awesome with Linux as well. It supports OGG and FLAC and also SD cards. It can play videos and display pictures and even run some Flash applications.

I just bought a creative zen, it came with 4GB, but i added a SDHC card for another 4GB. gnomad2 is the program that you have to install to get it to work in ubuntu. Rhythym box didn't detect the player. but i haven't given up on that cause yet.

The D2 is definitely a fine choice.. but if you want to fool around with it as well, I'd go for a N800 with Kagu or one of the hundreds of other players on Maemo. On top of that, it has two SD slots, making for up to 32 GB of expandable memory. You can find one for about $220 these days.

If you just want multimedia though - which is fine - get the Cowon.

If you want cheap, then try Best Buy's Insignia brand. The Sport and Pilot both have microSD slot and both support ogg out of the box.

If you don't care about ogg support, try the SanDisk Sansa Connect or older e250 model.
