I just fire up a text editor and create a text file. I have several directories with a "notes.txt" or similar file residing within.

Tomboy. I have it sitting as an applet in my panel. Anything I need to reference is two clicks away. The list formatting of Tomboy is really easy to use, too. Just type a -, the list item, and then Enter, and you have a bulleted list.

Thats what I use, if i'm doing mindmapping. I'm usually not doing mindmapping, and i'm usually doing math-heavy stuff, so its generally a notebook and pencil for me, can't type a latex file as fast as i can write it.

Only thing that bugs me about free mind is that its java, and it tends to wake up my CPU from idle ~300 times per second, which hurts the battery life a bit...

Ever since I installed Ubuntu on my laptop, I have used only the text editor under Accessories (Ubuntu 7.04) for taking notes.

And it works brilliantly.

That really keeps notes to a bare minimum.

Hmm, I wouldn't count that then.
